Merced County takes its name from the Merced River, originally called El Río de Nuestra Señora de la Mercedes (“River of Our Lady of Mercy”). Located in the central part of California’s San Joaquin Valley, Merced County had a population of 267,390 as of the 2020 census and covers roughly 1,980 square miles. The City of Merced serves as the county seat and largest city, alongside five other incorporated cities: Atwater, Livingston, Los Banos, Gustine, and Dos Palos. In addition, the county includes several unincorporated communities such as Castle, Delhi, Hilmar, Planada, and Winton.
The local economy is driven by a mix of public sector jobs and industries such as agriculture, manufacturing, retail, food processing, and tourism.
