Export Protein Trader – Chicago, IL

Main Function:
Reporting to the Director of Export Protein Meals this position will be responsible for the procurement, trading and logistics coordination and risk management of internal and third party finished goods. This position serves as a higher level position which is part of the export team accountable for optimizing the trade of finished goods, managing freight and hedge exposure and delivering consistent P&L performance. The position requires advanced strategic thinking, deep global market expertise, disciplined risk management, and the ability to influence across functions. This individual will act as a leader within the organization, communicating global market intelligence while strengthening customer and internal relationships.

  • Trade soybean meal and fiber from internal and third party soybean crush suppliers
  • Own P&L for fiber trading and contribute to overall export desk profitability
  • Identify and execute global arbitrage opportunities across destinations and origins
  • Trade soybean meal CIF paper markets and manage related flat price and basis exposure
  • Strategically seek out new business to drive growth
  • Optimize freight spreads through various railroads
  • Develops a clear understanding of local, national, & world markets & trends
  • Make timely, risk-adjusted commercial decisions in volatile markets and defend them logically
  • Works to attain positive cooperative relationships with internal colleagues across divisions and responsibilities
  • Develop and execute hedge strategies using futures and spreads
  • Analyze global supply/demand, crush margins and competitive export dynamics
  • Execute contracts including execution windows and quality specifications
  • Collaborate cross-functionally to optimize New Orleans export asset utilization
  • Oversee and trade various river barge freight risk positions.
  • Coordinate throughput logistics with internal and third-party river assets
  • Monitor replacement economics, margin performance, and position exposure
  • Provide market intelligence to our global teams
  • Prepare month end accounting documents and perform month end reporting requirements
  • Ensure individual goals are aligned with corporate goals
  • Constantly works on individual personal development within the company
  • Understand and has strict adherence to corporate compliance policies
  • Is willing to work outside normal business hours including weekends

Qualifications:

  • University degree in agriculture or business (i.e economics, finance, accounting) and a minimum of five years of grain/product merchandising experience
  • Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered
  • Ability to excel within high-risk fast-paced work environment
  • Ability to assess global risk and exercise sound judgement in making decisions
  • Negotiation and interpersonal skills
  • Strong understanding of freight markets and international trade flows
  • Experience managing derivatives exposure
  • Ability to work in a team environment
  • Computer competent, with demonstrated ability in the use of spreadsheet. Database and word processing software

Base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Hourly and salaried non-exempt employees will also be paid overtime pay when working qualifying overtime hours.

If hired, employees will be in an “at-will position” and the Company reserves the right to modify base pay (as well as any other discretionary payment or compensation program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, Company or individual department/team performance, and market factors.

The pay range for this position is expected to be between:

$110,100.00 - $205,200.00
