In India, Castrol is a publicly listed company, leading in the Automotive, Industrial, and Marine lubricant sectors. With iconic brands, relentless innovation, strong customer relationships and a team of highly motivated employees, we have maintained our market leadership in India for over a century. At Castrol, success knows no bounds. We offer a fast-paced learning environment where you can develop your career in specialized functions. Castrol India has a proud legacy of championing top talent both locally and globally.

We are currently looking for an Expert Technologist – Modelling and Simulation for India based at Patalganga with details mentioned below.

What you will do...

The Engineer – Thermal Management provides deep technical expertise for Castrol in system-level thermal modelling and simulation, with a primary focus on electrified powertrain, battery, motor, and fluid-based thermal systems. The role translates advanced physical modelling into actionable guidance for research prioritisation, formulation strategy and partner-led innovation programmes.

The role operates at the intersection of simulation, fluids, materials and system design – influencing both internal R&D direction and external collaborations with key customers to build new business opportunities for Castrol.

Key accountabilities include:

System-level thermal modelling and simulation

  • Develop and apply 1D and system-level thermal models integrating fluid design with components such as pipework, pumps, heat exchangers, batteries, motors, and electronics to evaluate whole-system performance rather than isolated components.
  • Quantify and compare cooling architectures (e.g. indirect vs direct / immersive cooling) across multiple applications, including batteries, motors, and data-centre-relevant systems for automotive and non-automotive areas.
  • Use modelling outputs to guide engineering trade-offs and decision-making, not just reporting results.

Thermal management of electrified systems

  • Lead modelling activity for battery thermal management, including optimisation of flow channels, heat transfer paths and fluid distribution at cell, moldule and pack level.
  • Support electric motor and power electronics cooling challenges, evaluating novel fluids, architectures and heat rejection strategies.
  • Contribute to projects covering ultra-fast charging, electrification, and hydrogen-adjacent thermal challenges.

Simulation-led research prioritisation

  • Use simulation to assess the “size of the prize” for different formulation or fluid technologies.
  • Provide quantitative insight on how fluid properties translate to system-level benefit, informing which R&D routes should be prioritised.
  • Reduce reliance on costly or slow experimental iteration by front-loading decisions with modelling insight

Programme and partner engagement

  • Act as a subject-matter expert on externally funded and partner-led projects.
  • Engage with multiple internal teams (e.g. EV Fluids, formulation scientists, hardware engineers) to ensure modelling outputs are usable, relevant, and timely.
  • Provide expert input to reviews, capability discussions, and technology strategy forums.

Technical stewardship and capability development

  • Shape and evolve thermal and system-level modelling capability within Advanced Fluids Research.
  • Mentor and technically guide colleagues on modelling approaches, assumptions, limitations, and interpretation.
  • Maintain awareness of state-of-the-art approaches in thermal management, simulation, and electrified systems.

What you will bring...

  • Degree in mechanical, aeronautical or automotive engineering.
  • Minimum of 15 years’ experience in industry using STARCCM+ CFD modelling software.
  • Strong background in fluid mechanics with experience in electronics modelling and/or automotive CAE applied to real systems.
  • Strong expertise in multiphase modelling, especially 1D and 3D CFD of HVAC systems.
  • Desirable experience using Siemens AMESim.
  • Proficiency in CAD, preferably Siemens NX.
  • Desirable expertise in battery modelling.
  • Ability to interface with High Performance Computing (HPC) resources, basic knowledge of Linux scripting.
  • The skill to create tools and methodologies to reduce complexity without sacrificing quality.
  • Ability to translate complex modelling outputs into clear engineering and strategic recommendations.
  • Clear and effective communicator with excellent written and spoken English. You will engage both technical and non‑technical audiences globally at various organisational levels, bringing gravitas and credibly to influence and support change.
  • Strong problem‑solving, analytical and conceptual design skills.
  • Delivery‑focused with excellent planning, organisational and execution capability; able to autonomously navigate complex and ambiguous technical challenges at pace.
