Job Description

To provide care that is patient and family centered in both inpatient and outpatient environments that exemplifies best practice, fosters relationship based care and maintains the integrity of professional exercise physiologist standards and nursing standards. Practice care guidelines are based on the ANA code of ethics, professional code of conduct and standards from American Society of Exercise Physiologists, and regulatory agency standards by which the exercise physiologists provides care in collaboration with the RN and/or RT.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Will, under the order of or supervision of a physician, perform the duties of non-invasive cardiopulmonary diagnostic procedures after completion of training and competency evaluation in each procedure: ECG, rhythm strip, heart monitor hook-up, treadmill stress test, nuclear stress test, stress ECHO tests, and DOB echo and nuclear test

  • Will record short cardiopulmonary history on patients through the asking of questions relevant to testing or procedure to be performed.

  • Will maintain departmental statistical and individual productivity records.

  • Will act as part of the cardiac fast teams for inpatient units

  • Will use common sense and special medical skills with regard to patient age, diagnosis and physical abilities.

  • Will edit ECG and stress testing reports as established by policy.

  • Will directly interact with the patient and physician in receipt, review, scanning and reporting of event recorders.

  • Will promote an environment that focuses on patient safety.

  • Will follow Departmental, Hospital and Human Resources Policy & Procedures.

c. Provides accurate, ti mely docu mentation for patient charges.

d. Charts and docu me nts initial and daily asses sment data in pa rticipa nt records.

e. Assess pa tient’s pre, during, and po st exercise making a ppr opri ate referr als an dor r ec ommendations to particip ant and other st aff.

2. Qual ity

a. Interacts as a team pl ayer and pa rticipates in continuous quality i mprov ement activiti es, data gat hering, and c hange proce ss within t he organizat io n.

b. Participa tes in the ini tial assess ment and orie ntation of n ew participants; assists in the develo pment of the individuali zed plan of c are with other st aff memb ers.

c. Contributes expertise as a member of a multidisciplin ary team to o ffer co mprehensive tr eat ment str ategies to provide po siti ve outco mes for individual participants and for the progra ms off ered.

d. De monstrat es the i nter personal and observation al skills need ed to effectively identify appropriate psycho soci al ad aption to illn ess and/or the presence of psychopathology (e.g., depression, anger, etc.).

e. Participates in the collection, analysis and reporting of identified individual patient and program outco mes.

3. Patie nt Sati sfaction

a. Takes steps to i mprove patient satisfa ction with care, as sisti ng the RN to develop strategies to i mprove patient/ sig ni fica nt othe rfa mily satis fa ction.

b. Understands and utilizes conte mporary theories of health behavior change in hel ping participa nts identi fy le arning and lifestyle modification goals.

c. Assess patient’s risk factors that are modifiable and de monstrates ability to offer support and strategies to aid patient in therapeutic lifestyle changes (TLC).

d. D emonstrates use of relationship based care model.

4. Patient Safety

a. Supervises exercise session, monitoring participants for inappropriate responses to exercise.

b. Effectively applies knowl edge of exercise science to a population with cardiovascular and pul monary disea se and other potential conditions.

c. Develops and adjusts individual exe rcise prescription in 6 minute walk, daily patient response in rehab, and physician recom mendations on a regular basis.

d. Im mediately reports any new, ch anging and/or significant conditions.

e. Applies safety principles in provision of patient care and follows safety, fire, hazardous waste disposal and e mergency response plans.

5. Professional Growth

a. Identifies own li mitati ons and seeks assi stance when needed and de monstrates a willingness to strive toward proficiency in the core co mpetencies.

b. Particip ates in depa rt ment/unit dev elop ment initiativ es.

c. Shares knowledge and skills with colleag ues a nd others and serves as content or skill expe rt.

d. Co mpletes new hire orientation and ongoing mandatory education.

e. Identifies professional needs and collaborates with manag ement for learning opportunities in for self and others.

f. Perfor ms follow up on recognized needs and correction plans.

6. Custo mer Service

a. Exe mpli fies excellent g uest r el ations to patients, visitors, physicians and co- workers.

b. Provide a professional and quiet patie nt enviro nment, be flexible with assign ments, staffing needs and assigned shifts.

c. Practice AIDET (Acknowledge, Identi fy, Duration, Explanation, Thank You).

d. Pro mote commi tment to co-workers, view all staff as part of an equal team and be approachable at all ti mes, and maint ain interdep art mental relationships.

e. Provide holistic care for diverse patient populations.

Education and Experience Required:

1. Bachelor's de gree in health related field or Exerci se Science.

2. A minimum of one year of cardiology experience preferred if degree in health related field.

3. Area specific required education may be obta ined upon hire and is to be maintained, e.g., ACLS, BLS, etc.

Licensure Preferred:

ACSM Certified Exercise Physiologist (EP-C)
ASEP Board Certified Exercise Physiologist (EPC)
