Your New Role

The Executive Producer, Documentary Series Local Originals (GSA) is, together with VP, responsible for the development, editorial oversight, and delivery of premium locally produced documentary series serving the German-speaking markets. The role focuses on originating and managing unscripted premium content that reflects regional cultural relevance while meeting the creative, editorial, and operational standards of HBO.

This position operates as a senior creative and management function, working closely with local production partners and internal regional and global teams to ensure successful execution of HBO’s local documentary strategy.

Your Role Accountabilities

Creative & Editorial Oversight

• Lead the selection, development and execution of local original documentary series across the GSA region, in close collaboration with VP
• Review and approve pitches, treatments, scripts, rough cuts, and final deliverables
• Ensure all content aligns with HBO’s editorial standards, storytelling expectations, and local regulatory requirements
• Provide editorial guidance that balances strong local perspectives with international storytelling appeal

Production & Operational Management

• Oversee multiple documentary productions simultaneously from development through delivery
• Ensure productions are completed within approved budgets, schedules, and contractual parameters
• Partner closely with Production Management, Legal and Business Affairs and Post Production on budgeting, timing and contracting
• Monitor delivery timelines and technical specifications in line with HBO requirements

Regional & Cross-Functional Collaboration

• Act as a key point of contact for local production partners across Germany, Switzerland, and Austria
• Collaborate with EMEA and global HBO teams across Editorial, Marketing, Communications, and PR to support launch and positioning
• Contribute to regional slate planning and long-term local documentary strategy

Talent & Partner Management

• Build and maintain strong relationships with local filmmakers, journalists, producers, and production companies
• Represent HBO’s creative and business interests in all external engagements
• Provide guidance and mentorship to junior team members, where applicable

• Minimum 10 years of professional experience producing or executive producing documentary films or series
• Significant experience working in the GSA region with established knowledge of local production environments
• Proven ability to manage complex documentary productions, including budgets and schedules
• Strong editorial judgment and experience overseeing premium unscripted content
• Experience working with broadcasters or global streaming platforms preferred
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills in German and English
• Strong leadership and decision-making capabilities
• Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
• Ability to operate effectively in a matrixed, international organization
• High level of organizational discipline and attention to detail
• Collaborative and solution-oriented working style

Ihre Aufgaben

Kreative und redaktionelle Verantwortung

• Gemeinsam mit dem VP Leitung der Auswahl, Entwicklung und Umsetzung lokaler Original-Dokumentarserien in der GSA-Region
• Prüfung und Freigabe von Pitches, Exposés, Drehbüchern, Rohschnitten und finalen Fassungen
• Sicherstellung, dass alle Inhalte den redaktionellen Standards, den erzählerischen Qualitätsansprüchen und den lokalen regulatorischen Vorgaben von HBO entsprechen
• Redaktionelle Begleitung mit dem Ziel, eine ausgewogene Verbindung zwischen authentischen lokalen Perspektiven und internationaler Attraktivität der Geschichten zu schaffen

Produktions- und operatives Management

• Steuerung mehrerer Dokumentarproduktionen gleichzeitig – von der Entwicklung bis zur finalen Auslieferung
• Sicherstellung der termingerechten und budgetkonformen Umsetzung innerhalb der vereinbarten vertraglichen Rahmenbedingungen
• Enge Zusammenarbeit mit den Bereichen Production Management, Legal & Business Affairs sowie Post Production bei Budgetplanung, Zeitmanagement und Vertragsgestaltung
• Überwachung von Lieferterminen und technischen Spezifikationen gemäß den HBO-Anforderungen

Regionale und bereichsübergreifende Zusammenarbeit

• Zentrale Ansprechperson für lokale Produktionspartner in Deutschland, Österreich und der Schweiz
• Zusammenarbeit mit den EMEA- und globalen HBO-Teams aus den Bereichen Redaktion, Marketing, Kommunikation und PR zur Unterstützung von Markteinführungen und Positionierung
• Mitwirkung an der regionalen Programmplanung sowie an der langfristigen Strategie für lokale Dokumentarproduktionen

Talent- und Partnermanagement

• Aufbau und Pflege nachhaltiger Beziehungen zu lokalen Filmemacher, Journalist, Produzent und Produktionsunternehmen
• Vertretung der kreativen und wirtschaftlichen Interessen von HBO in der Zusammenarbeit mit externen Partnern
• Fachliche Unterstützung und gegebenenfalls Mentoring von Junior-Teammitgliedern

Erforderliche Qualifikationen und Erfahrungen

• Mindestens 10 Jahre Berufserfahrung als Producer oder Executive Producer im Bereich Dokumentarfilm oder Dokumentarserien
• Umfangreiche Erfahrung in der GSA-Region sowie fundierte Kenntnisse der lokalen Produktionslandschaft
• Nachgewiesene Erfahrung in der Steuerung komplexer Dokumentarproduktionen einschließlich Budget- und Terminverantwortung
• Ausgeprägtes redaktionelles Urteilsvermögen und Erfahrung in der Betreuung hochwertiger Non-Fiction-Produktionen
• Erfahrung in der Zusammenarbeit mit Fernsehsendern oder internationalen Streaming-Plattformen ist von Vorteil
• Hervorragende mündliche und schriftliche Kommunikationsfähigkeiten in Deutsch und Englisch
• Ausgeprägte Führungs- und Entscheidungsstärke
• Hervorragende Fähigkeiten im Stakeholder-Management und in der Kommunikation
• Fähigkeit, erfolgreich in einer internationalen Matrixorganisation zu arbeiten
• Hohes Maß an Organisationsfähigkeit, Struktur und Genauigkeit
• Teamorientierte, lösungsorientierte und kooperative Arbeitsweise
