Job Description

Create your best future and join Westpac as an Executive Manager, Technology Risk

What’s the role?

As an Executive Manager, Technology Risk, you’ll play a key role in helping Westpac make well-informed decisions about technology risk. You’ll provide independent advice, oversight and constructive challenge across major technology programs, strategic architecture decisions and platform modernisation initiatives.

Working closely with Technology Architecture and Engineering teams, you’ll assess technical designs, infrastructure roadmaps and strategic changes. You’ll help ensure resilience, security, recoverability and effective risk management are considered from the outset, balancing these priorities with practical delivery outcomes.

You’ll review complex technology risks including AI-impact, examine critical failure scenarios and assess recovery capabilities, architecture dependencies, technical debt and obsolescence. Drawing on internal incidents, external events and emerging industry risks, you’ll provide forward-looking insights that help senior leaders understand potential impacts and make sound decisions.

This is a permanent, Melbourne or Sydney based role where you’ll work with a high degree of independence, build trusted relationships and influence important technology decisions across Westpac. You’ll also help strengthen awareness of effective risk and control practices across the organisation.

What do I need?

You’ll bring strong technology risk expertise, sound judgement and the confidence to provide constructive challenge at a senior level.

  • Deep technical understanding of enterprise architecture, software engineering, cloud platforms, infrastructure, networking, platform operations, technology asset lifecycle management, site reliability engineering (SRE), resilience engineering, disaster recovery and operational recovery capabilities.
  • Ability to evaluate architecture and engineering decisions across the technology lifecycle, including solution design, CI/CD practices, infrastructure-as-code, technology debt, legacy modernisation, observability, automation and operational resilience, identifying emerging risks and translating technical findings into actionable business outcomes.
  • Strong capability to provide independent challenge to engineering teams, architects and technology leaders on design decisions, control effectiveness, reliability, scalability, security and resilience, while balancing risk management with delivery objectives.
  • Excellent communication and analytical skills, influencing and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to engage effectively with engineers, architects, platform owners, CIOs, executive leadership, auditors and regulators, adapting technical depth and messaging to suit different audiences.
