Job Description

Executive Manager, Risk Advisory & Operations

  • You are a seasoned risk leader with a track record of leading large, high-performing teams, influencing stakeholders, and embedding strong risk capability across complex organisations.

  • You will play a critical leadership role in helping Bankwest become Australia’s favourite digital bank by enabling safe, sustainable growth and operational excellence.

  • Together we’ll build a proactive, commercially minded risk culture that empowers teams to deliver better customer and business outcomes.

See yourself in our team

At Bankwest, we’re on a bold transformation journey — evolving from a proud Western Australian heritage bank into a modern digital bank built for the future. As part of the Commonwealth Bank Group, Bankwest plays an important role in delivering innovative, customer-focused banking experiences in an increasingly competitive and fast-evolving landscape.

This is a significant leadership opportunity reporting to the General Manager Risk, Strategy & Performance. As Executive Manager, Risk Advisory & Operations, you will lead a large, multi-layered team responsible for partnering with the business to deliver strong Line 1 risk management, operational excellence, and uplift in risk maturity across Bankwest.

You will operate as a trusted advisor to senior leaders across the business, helping teams navigate an evolving risk landscape while supporting the delivery of strategic priorities. This role requires a highly proactive leader who is energised by building capability, driving continuous improvement, and fostering a strong, self-reliant risk culture across the organisation.

You’ll lead a broad risk advisory and operations function that provides practical guidance, oversight and challenge across operational risk, compliance risk, governance and frameworks, issue and incident management and business resilience activities.

Do work that matters

As Executive Manager, Risk Advisory & Operations, you will lead and evolve a high-performing team of risk professionals while partnering closely with senior executives and business leaders across Bankwest and the broader CBA Group.

You will help ensure risk management is embedded into day-to-day decision making, operational delivery and strategic execution — enabling teams to move with pace while remaining within risk appetite and regulatory obligations.

Your day could look like (but not limited to):

  • Leading the Risk Advisory & Operations function, setting strategic direction and building a strong, proactive and commercially minded risk culture across Bankwest.

  • Providing strategic and pragmatic risk advice on operational risk, compliance obligations, governance, controls, resilience and emerging risk themes.

  • Driving continuous improvement in Line 1 risk practices, frameworks and ways of working to improve effectiveness, transparency and business outcomes.

  • Leading large, multi-layered teams, building capability, succession depth and a high-performance culture across diverse portfolios.

  • Partnering with business leaders to proactively identify, assess and respond to emerging risks, issues, incidents and vulnerabilities.

  • Delivering high-quality risk insights, reporting and business intelligence to support executive decision making and governance forums.

  • Supporting the design and implementation of robust operational processes and controls that enable safe and efficient customer outcomes.

  • Acting as a strategic connector across teams to ensure risks, dependencies and trade-offs are surfaced early and managed effectively.

  • Building strong relationships across Bankwest, Retail Banking Services and the broader CBA Group to influence outcomes and share best practice.

We’re interested in hearing from people who have:

  • Significant leadership experience in Line 1 risk, operational risk, compliance risk or related risk disciplines within financial services or similarly complex, regulated environments.

  • Proven experience leading large, high-performing and multi-layered teams through change, growth and capability uplift.

  • Strong ability to influence and partner with senior executives and stakeholders across complex organisations.

  • Demonstrated success embedding proactive risk cultures and improving organisational risk capability and maturity.

  • Deep understanding of operational risk frameworks, governance, controls, issues and incident management, and regulatory obligations.

  • Strategic thinking capability, strong judgement and the ability to balance customer, commercial and risk outcomes.

  • Exceptional communication and stakeholder engagement skills, including the ability to simplify complexity and challenge constructively.

  • Experience operating in fast-paced, transformational environments with competing priorities and enterprise-level complexity.

  • A passion for developing people, coaching and building strong, engaged teams.
