The Hong Kong Jockey Club

Founded in 1884, The Hong Kong Jockey Club ("the Club") is a world-class horse sports and entertainment organisation that acts continuously for the betterment of our society. The Club has a unique value creation model, through which the Club generates sustainable economic and social value for the benefit of the community and supports the HKSAR Government in combatting illegal gambling. In 2025/26, the Club returned a total of HK$39.3 billion to the community. This included HK$30.7 billion to the HKSAR Government in taxes and Lotteries Fund contributions and HK$8.6 billion in approved charity donations. The Club is Hong Kong’s largest single taxpayer and one of the city’s major employers. Its Charities Trust is one of the world’s leading charity donors.

The Division

The Charities and Community (C&C) Division manages strategic planning, grant donations, impactful project initiation, community engagement, and the day-to-day operations of the HKJC Charities Trust. C&C works with the Government, NGOs, and community partners to proactively identify root causes of social issues and address them through innovative approaches and cross-sectoral collaboration.

The Institute of Philanthropy

The Institute of Philanthropy was established in September 2023 through a seed grant of HK$6.8 billion (US$870 million) from The Hong Kong Jockey Club and its Charities Trust. Established as an independent “think-fund-do” tank for China, Asia and beyond, IoP is dedicated to promoting philanthropic thought leadership and enhancing sector capabilities at local, regional and global levels in collaboration with fellow funders. It seeks to provide an Asia-based platform bringing global stakeholders together to promote the betterment of societies everywhere.

The Role

In order to enhance the national and global presence of the Institute of Philanthropy (IoP) in the increasingly competitive space for philanthropic thought-leadership and to communicate the unique position and commitments of IoP, the job holder serves as Deputy Secretary General – Strategic Communications of IoP and is responsible for spearheading, developing and executing holistic communication strategies with a view to optimising IoP’s core mission. In addition, s/he should proactively maximise synergy with the Club’s Public Affairs and the Trust’s Community Engagement teams to showcase the integrated business model locally, nationally and internationally.

For the Department’s day-to-day operations, the job holder will lead a team (comprising of one Assistant Executive and two staff-grade members) to engage and manage agency(ies), as well as work with internal divisions and departments of the Club (that undertake certain core management functions for IoP). The job holder will oversee stakeholder engagement and management, publications, social media and other electronic means; and is in overall charge of strategic communications for IoP.

The job holder’s primary focus is on IoP, and is also expected to co-ordinate and support the Founding Funders of IoP (namely the Club and its Charities Trust) to curate and execute holistic and integrated communication strategies to maximise the reach and impacts.

Major Tasks

  • Leads a team of communication professionals to develop and manage communication efforts of the Institute of Philanthropy;
  • Devises, develops, manages and executes holistic communication strategies through content creation and curation, including issue analysis, market landscape research, strategy benchmarking, recommendation of strategic foci; engages and manages outside agency(ies) to develop and executes the communication strategies through responsibly managing the annual budget;
  • Maps, identifies, engages and manages stakeholders of IoP from Hong Kong, Chinese Mainland and overseas with comprehensive plans and strategies; collaborates with internal divisions and departments of the Club to synergise these engagement efforts;
  • Steers, plans, manages and executes communication channels of IoP, including but not limited to webpages, social media, regular newsletters and monthly updates, publications and reports; develops and manages impact and outcome measurements for these communication channels;
  • Spearheads and manages the content and narrative around IoP’s key external-facing events (including but not limited to PBC Forum and Foundations Circle, and participation in the World Health Assembly, United Nations platforms, Prince Mahidol Award Ceremony, World Health Summit, Gairdner International Award, AVPN Global Conference, APHIC, Philanthropy Asia Summit etc) with the support from and in coordination with the Club and its Charities Trust;
  • Devises, curates and develops campaign(s) and promotional efforts to better showcase the commitment and contribution of IoP to national and international communities with the supports from the Club and its Charities Trust; co-ordinates event sponsorship / engagements to enhance national and international presence of IoP;
  • Collaborates with internal divisions and departments of the Club to maximise the exposure and presence of the Club and its Charities Trust and to showcase the integrated business model of the Club to partners and stakeholders; and
  • Develops and leads the implementation of IoP-wide new initiatives.

About You

  • University degree in a relevant discipline
  • A minimum of 10 years relevant managerial experiences in media and communications or related sectors (and those with experiences in social media / digital means are at an advantage)
  • Excellent understanding of the philanthropic landscape regionally and internationally
  • Well experienced in multi-task project management for agency(ies)
  • Track record in devising and formulating communication strategies
  • Experienced in executing communication strategies in sizable organisations
  • Capable of mapping, engaging and managing stakeholders
