The Role:

The Executive Director, Laboratory Services, North Division (Western WA and Alaska) serves as the key administrative leader in the division, with direct oversight of multiple laboratories and accountability to integrate acute and ambulatory laboratory operations in support of Providence patients across the continuum of care. This position works in close collaboration with system and division organizational leadership in developing and implementing laboratory performance improvement.

In concert with the System Lab Leader, the Executive Director provides strategic leadership as well as financial and operational management and direction to the laboratories in the division.

Attributes critical to success include the ability to make difficult decisions within the political, regulatory, and economic environment and consistent with overall system strategy. The Executive Director is accountable for developing, implementing, and managing a matrix business model that supports division and system strategic goals within an integrated healthcare delivery system.

The Executive Director operates in a dyad relationship within the division, with administrative oversight for Anatomic Pathology and Clinical Laboratory Services, guiding comprehensive strategic, tactical, and operational planning across the region. The Executive Director also works closely with Shared Services Lab Leaders to coordinate locally embedded and centrally led services, including Quality, Point of Care, and Billing.

The position requires experience developing and implementing both short- and long-range business plans, coordinating division and system strategies, analyzing and managing financial performance, maintaining physician relationships, and coordinating Laboratory Services to ensure optimal synergies of service, quality, and affordability. The Executive Director must be able to navigate political environments without delaying decisions and serve as a change advocate advancing the System of Laboratories strategy.

Initial focus includes working with System Lab Leadership and divisional leaders to implement changes aligned with Clinical Shared Services strategy and laboratory initiatives. Long-term responsibilities include ongoing financial and operational oversight of Laboratory Services across the division.

What You'll Do:

Strategic Leadership & Laboratory Services Alignment

  • Coordinate with the System Lab Leader to lead planning and implementation activities for transformation of Laboratory Services within the division

  • Implement and lead laboratory governance and operational models that support transformation to a cost- and quality-competitive structure

  • Collaborate with senior leadership in long-range health system strategic planning to promote excellence, maximize system integration, improve patient care experience, and enhance the value proposition of delivered services

Operational Leadership & Laboratory Services Performance

  • Provide operational leadership and accountability for overall finance and operations of Laboratory Services

  • Improve process efficiencies compared against industry best practices to improve quality of care, customer service, and patient satisfaction

  • Implement practices to achieve productivity and efficiency consistent with Division and System goals

  • Establish organizational structures and management systems to achieve strategic and tactical goals for delivery of Laboratory Services

Program Development & Integration

  • Direct Laboratory Services in alignment with system lab strategy, clinical guidelines, utilization trends, cost efficiency, and payer reimbursement

  • Develop and implement integration and growth strategies consistent with system laboratory strategy, including quality, fiscal management, compliance, reimbursement, and physician support

  • Foster structures and programs necessary to maintain and continuously improve delivery of Laboratory Services across the regional delivery system

  • Ensure System Lab and Clinical Programs’ short- and long-term strategic plans for Laboratory Services are fully implemented

Process Improvement & Systems Optimization

  • Recommend and pursue administrative and process simplification designed to reduce waste, rework, and redundancy at the regional level

  • Work closely with Regional IT to achieve goals consistent with System Laboratory and IT strategies

Physician & Clinical Partnership

  • Collaborate with Division CMO and physician leadership to develop and strengthen relationships in alignment with system strategies around laboratory clinical initiatives

  • Ensure a high level of service and support to physicians and clinicians by understanding medical staff priorities and designing services to meet needs

  • Work collaboratively with medical and clinical staff to provide an operational environment that supports clinical decision-making and quality outcomes

Financial & Performance Management

  • Regularly report to division dyad partner and System Lab Leader on key financial indicators related to laboratory strategy, including performance plans and gap reduction

  • In collaboration with Division Finance, oversee financial and capital needs for Laboratory Services and administer capital budgets aligned with system strategy

  • Ensure adherence to laboratory KPI targets and financial performance forecasts

Organizational Leadership & Change Management

  • Implement workforce changes as required by System Lab strategy in collaboration with Human Resources

  • Lead within a matrixed environment with multiple competing priorities

  • Act as a change advocate aligned with system laboratory strategy and transformation initiatives

  • Actively support and incorporate mission and core values into daily leadership activities

What You’ll Bring

Education & Credentials

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Science (preferably Laboratory Science or related field)

  • Master’s Degree in Business Administration, Public Health, Health Administration, or related field (preferred)

Experience & Expertise

  • 10 or more years of experience as a proven leader (P&L accountability) within a fast-paced, complex, and matrixed environment such as a large integrated health system or a commercial laboratory, with generalist laboratory oversight (all departments)

  • 3 years of experience at a multi-campus or multi-laboratory location with full oversight

  • 3 years of experience working in changing environments where flexibility and comfort with ambiguity have produced significant results

  • 3 years of experience in Quality, Regulatory, and Compliance areas (preferred)

  • Demonstrated success working in an organization with strong regulatory oversight

  • Demonstrated ability to make data-driven, high-impact decisions

  • Demonstrated ability to navigate political, regulatory, and economic challenges

  • Systems thinker with long-term planning experience

  • Demonstrated ability to conceptualize and implement new service delivery models

  • Proven and exceptionally strong business and financial management and budget development skills

  • Demonstrated leadership ability, communication, and interpersonal skills necessary to interact effectively with physicians, management, staff, external agencies/customers, and community members

  • Demonstrates courage and confidence to lead and inspire an organization through change and periodic uncertainty

  • Results-oriented, data-driven, with a focus on action and outcomes and an ability to gain consensus where appropriate

  • Ability to work under pressure, remain flexible with competing priorities, and execute effectively

The full pay range is listed in accordance with applicable law. Final compensation will be determined based on qualifications, experience, organizational compensation alignment, and the approved hiring department budget for the position. This position may also be eligible for incentive compensation and benefits.

Posted are the minimum and the maximum wage rates on the wage range for this position. The successful candidate's placement on the wage range for this position will be determined based upon relevant job experience and other applicable factors. These amounts are the base pay range; additional compensation may be available for this role, such as shift differentials, standby/on-call, overtime, premiums, extra shift incentives, or bonus opportunities.
