The Virginia Employment Commission is seeking a highly organized, resourceful, and mission‑driven Executive Assistant to support the Commissioner at the center of the agency’s top leadership. In this role, you will manage the daily workflow of the executive team, coordinate high‑visibility meetings and travel, handle confidential and sensitive projects, and serve as a trusted liaison to the Governor’s Office, Secretary of Labor, General Assembly, and the public. You’ll be the steady hand ensuring deadlines are met, communications are polished, and operations run seamlessly—while gaining unmatched, front‑row insight into how a statewide agency leads major initiatives, including Virginia’s new Paid Family and Medical Leave program.

Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of office and workflow management; travel coordination and logistics; business etiquette and protocol (telephone etiquette; proper spelling, punctuation, grammar, and style); and lines of authority.
Strong oral and written, organizational, administrative, typing, computer (e.g., Microsoft Office or similar software), analytical, and customer service skills.
Demonstrated ability to provide executive-level support to senior managers and interact with a wide variety of individuals inside and outside the agency.
Ability to communicate tactfully with individuals and groups, work independently and with others, and make appropriate judgments and recommendations on issues with broad agency impact.
Ability to manage a variety of assignments and changing priorities, and to perform administrative duties such as reception, typing, filing, meeting and travel logistics, and supplies.
Ability to interpret and apply policies and procedures, respond to requests timely and professionally, handle confidential information with discretion, and perform quantitative and narrative reporting.
Experience providing executive-level administrative support in a high-volume environment.
Note: Completion of FOIA Officer training required within the first year of employment.
Knowledge of the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) rules and regulations.
Experience providing administrative support and/or managing office activities for an executive, senior manager, or board in a government setting and/or with legislative activities.
Familiarity with Virginia state government processes such as eVA procurement, travel reimbursement, and records retention.

The modern government of Virginia is nearly identical in structure to the federal government, and is divided into 3 branches, these being the executive, legislative, and judiciary branches. The Virginia General Assembly is comprised of the 100-member House of Delegates and the 40-member Senate. A governor and lieutenant governor are elected every 4 years. Governors cannot be elected to or serve consecutive terms. Virginia’s judicial system consists of the Supreme Court of Virginia and the Court of Appeals of Virginia, the Circuit Courts, and the lower General District Courts and the Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Courts. Virginia has 13 electoral votes in presidential elections, and possesses 11 seats in the U.S. House of Representatives.
