The Kentucky Department of Education is a service agency of the Commonwealth of Kentucky, and part of the
Education and Labor Cabinet. The department provides resources and guidance to Kentucky’s public schools and
districts as they implement the state’s P-12 education requirements. The department also serves as the state
liaison for federal education requirements and funding opportunities.
The department is led by an appointed commissioner of education, who is hired by and answers to the 11-member
Kentucky Board of Education. Offices are administered by associate commissioners, and divisions within those
offices are administered by division directors.
The department employs approximately 425 Frankfort-based workers; 175 employees in support of the Kentucky
School for the Blind (Jefferson County) and Kentucky School for the Deaf (Boyle County); and about 518
employees at the 50 Area Technology Centers across the state.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
- Provide professional support to the Office of Teaching and Learning by preparing purchase requests, travel
vouchers, print requests, maintaining filing system and all other paperwork required by the
deputy commissioner and staff. Draft correspondence, memorandums, reports or other responses that
require the interpretation and application of policies and procedures.
- Organize and monitor procedural work in the office. Serve as the office timekeeper, ensuring
staff complete the necessary forms for payroll and review for accuracy. Assist with completion
of required HR forms to be initiated for the hiring of new staff. Research information for leadership using
various options.
- Make travel arrangements for the leadership, including completion of travel reimbursements,
state park inter-account forms, out of state authorizations, etc. Coordinate all necessary
arrangements for meetings and/or trainings including conducting hotel site visits, set up hotel
contracts, ordering of handouts with print shop, audio and video equipment, registration of attendees.
- Assist with expense vouchers for staff in division to ensure correct budget codes. Maintain
inventory of all items valued over $500. Coordinate recruitment efforts – Festivals, College
and Career, back to school events with local organizations. Assist with expense vouchers for
staff in office to ensure correct budget codes. Schedule appointments for the leadership and
returns confirmation.
- Other duties as assigned.
