Job Description

The Hanover Legal Bill Review team supports the review and management of legal invoices submitted by law firms handling Hanover’s claims and litigation matters. This role provides an opportunity to work closely with legal billing, claims, and legal teams while developing strong analytical, financial, and legal-process knowledge.

The position is responsible for conducting detailed reviews of legal invoices to ensure that billed services are accurate, reasonable, necessary, and compliant with Hanover’s billing guidelines, negotiated agreements, rate structures, and applicable contractual terms. The role requires reviewing attorney and paralegal time entries, billing rates, expenses, discounts, task descriptions, and other invoice components to identify potential billing errors, inappropriate charges, duplicate entries, excessive or unreasonable time, block billing, administrative charges, and other guideline violations.

The selected candidate will use established legal bill review processes and systems to analyze invoices, apply appropriate billing rules, and make informed decisions regarding invoice adjustments, reductions, or approvals. The role also involves researching billing history, rate agreements, matter information, and supporting documentation when required to make accurate review decisions.

The candidate will work closely with claim handlers, attorneys, law firms, and internal stakeholders to clarify invoice-related questions, communicate findings, and resolve billing discrepancies. Strong communication and problem-solving skills are important, as the role may require explaining billing adjustments and providing clear supporting rationale for review decisions.

In addition to day-to-day invoice review, the role will involve identifying recurring billing trends, potential process gaps, and opportunities to improve legal spend management and billing compliance. The candidate will be expected to maintain accurate documentation of review decisions and support quality, productivity, audit, and reporting requirements.

The ideal candidate should have strong attention to detail, analytical ability, sound judgment, good written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to work with large volumes of detailed information. Prior experience in legal services, legal operations, insurance claims, invoice review, contract management, financial analysis, or a related field would be beneficial. The candidate should also be comfortable learning new systems, interpreting guidelines and contractual requirements, and working collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.

This role provides an opportunity to gain practical exposure to legal billing, litigation-related expenses, law-firm operations, claims processes, contractual requirements, and legal spend management while working with a leading insurance organization such as Hanover.

  • Review and analyze legal invoices submitted by law firms to ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance with Hanover’s legal billing guidelines and contractual terms.
  • Conduct detailed review of attorney and paralegal time entries, rates, expenses, discounts, and other billing components to identify discrepancies and inappropriate charges.
  • Identify potential billing issues such as duplicate entries, excessive or unreasonable time, block billing, vague descriptions, administrative charges, billing guideline violations, and unsupported expenses.
  • Apply appropriate billing rules, rate agreements, negotiated discounts, and client-specific guidelines while reviewing invoices.
  • Perform legal bill review using established processes, systems, and available billing data to ensure consistent and accurate invoice disposition.
  • Communicate with law firms, claim handlers, attorneys, and internal stakeholders to clarify billing questions and resolve invoice discrepancies.
  • Exercise sound judgment when determining whether charges should be approved, reduced, or rejected based on applicable guidelines and supporting information.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of review decisions, reductions, exceptions, and supporting rationale for audit and reporting purposes.
  • Monitor assigned workload and ensure invoices are reviewed and completed within established turnaround-time and quality requirements.
  • Support identification of recurring billing trends and opportunities to improve invoice accuracy, compliance, and overall legal spend management.
  • Collaborate with team members and leadership on process improvements, quality initiatives, and changes to billing guidelines or client requirements.
  • Maintain confidentiality of legal, claim, financial, and other sensitive information while following Hanover and EXL policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrate strong attention to detail, analytical thinking, communication skills, and the ability to interpret legal billing information and contractual requirements.
