The Casualty Claims Adjuster is a technical claims position that will work closely with the claims teams in London and Bermuda as well as the insurance underwriters in both locations. The ideal candidate will have direct experience in handling excess casualty claims with a willingness to flex to other lines of business such as professional lines as needed. This role will also liaise with Ascot’s external experts and TPAs utilized for administrative and operational support.
Essential Functions and Basic Duties:
Fully engage and be pro-active with claim management and underwriters on severity claims and emerging trends through informal/formal meetings.
Attend client meetings with fortune 500 c-suite trading partners and present key claim matters for renewals and new business opportunities.
Responsible for end-to-end management and direct handling of liability claims according to policy coverage and state requirements.
Identify, evaluate, and analyse coverage issues and prepare comprehensive coverage letters.
Evaluate and challenge complex loss and LAE allocation methodologies across multi-layer programmes to ensure accurate application of coverage, retention and layer exposure.
Work closely with brokers through regular communication and meetings to support timely responses, address queries, and build strong ongoing relationships.
Assess reinsurance implications of claims decisions, including recoverability and alignment with follow-the-settlements principles
Collaborate closely with external counsel to develop and implement cost-effective, appropriate litigation strategies that drive optimal claim outcomes.
Proactively negotiate settlement of claims within designated authority level and participate in and attend mediations, arbitrations, trials, and other claim meetings, as needed.
Maintain proactive oversight and/or supervision of all retained outside vendors and their associated billing practices and invoices.
Review and challenge cedent and broker calculations to ensure consistency with policy terms and market practice.
Evaluate claims for reserving, document the claim file and financial systems, and prepare appropriate reports.
Liaise with cross-functional departments such as actuarial, finance, operations and reinsurance as needed.
Present to internal and external business partners including reinsurance panel on performance of claims and emerging trends and risks.
Translate complex technical issues into clear, concise and defensible positions to support strategic decision-making.
Assimilate claims data and participate in presentations for monthly Claims/UW meetings.
Experience and Skills Required:
Experienced claims handler with minimum of 5-7 years’ technical claim handling of complex, multi-million-dollar excess casualty claims with follow-form and claims made coverage expertise.
Proven track record in handling complex claims and ability to evaluate policy exposure, analyse coverage, and recommend reserves to senior management.
Strong negotiating skills and ability to get insured buy-in on strategic litigation tactics.
Excellent analytical, written, and oral communication skills with ability to present to cross-functional constituents of varying seniority group wide.
Ability to work well under pressure with significant overtime, including weekends, and ability to meet tight deadlines and respond to shifting priorities.
TPA Management background is a plus.
Ability to flex to other lines of business given market demands a plus.
Willingness to drive process, best practices, and operational strategy from both an operational and technical perspective.
Strong collaborative skills and ability to thrive in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment.
Strong critical thinking and presentation skills, with the ability to influence others on complicated coverage issues and large exposure claims.
Excellent organizational, desk management and prioritization skills with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Must be positive, self-motivated, and possess strong interpersonal, communication and presentation skills.
Solution oriented team player with a strong relationship management skill set working with both internal and external stakeholders and customers.
Proficient in Microsoft Office, Excel, Power BI, and other data analysis tools.
Ability to travel as needed and other duties as assigned.
