THE TITLE OF DENTAL HYGIENST IS A COMPETITIVE CIVIL SERVICE CLASS TITLE, WHICH REQUIRES A TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE EXAM. THIS IS NOT A WRITTEN CIVIL SERVICE EXAMINATION, IT IS JUST A SUMMARY OF YOUR TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE.

This position involves the performance of dental examinations, dental prophylaxes, and administers instruction in dental hygiene and nutrition. The dental hygienist may be required to oversee the work of subordinate paraprofessionals. Most duties are performed on an independent basis under occasional guidance of a licensed dentist.

Examples of duties

• Supervises and renders the dental hygiene care to patients;
• Assists dentists during examination and treatment of patients and at dental operations;
• Supervises patient medication as prescribed by the dentist and/or professional staff;
• Maintains patient's charts and clinic records;
• May prepare monthly and annual reports;
• Implements outreach strategies to promote oral health across the lifespan, with a focus on underserved populations;
• Provides community-based oral health education with an emphasis on caries prevention, prenatal oral health, and the benefits of fluoride and fluoridated water;
• Assists with data collection and reporting to support program evaluation and improvement efforts;
• May attend community events, health fairs to promote oral health awareness and services;

Qualifications

Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of modern dentistry; good knowledge of preventative oral hygiene and dental care; ability to perform dental examinations and prophylaxis; ability to take x-rays; ability to assist dentists in the treatment of patients, especially in a clinic setting.

Supplemental information

Possession of a current, valid license to practice as a Registered Dental Hygienist as issued by the New York State Education Department at the time of appointment and possession of valid license throughout appointment.
