Under limited supervision, performs maintenance, diagnosis and repairs on a variety of gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles and heavy equipment. Working with priority input provided by the Fire Department Division Chief, performs specialized and skilled work involving the repair and maintenance of emergency vehicle apparatus assigned to the Fire Department, in addition to assisting with remainder of City fleet as workload allows. Work is performed with considerable independence in accordance with specific instructions and defined procedures and schedules. Position may require after hour call-outs for priority repairs of emergency vehicles as well. Assists the Fleet Superintendent in setting repair priorities, reviewing work, maintaining standards, training mechanics, and coordinating shop workload. Uses diagnostic computer and software from various manufacturers to assess equipment problems and issues. Performs related duties such as conducting preventive maintenance, operating shop equipment, providing wrecker service, maintaining service records, maintaining the shop, upkeep on maintenance facility, tools, and equipment.

Examples of duties


Education: High school graduate with vocational/technical school training in automotive/diesel/mechanical repairExperience: Seven (7) years of experience as a mechanic, to include five (5) as a heavy/diesel and/or EVT mechanicCertifications:

  • Valid driver’s license
  • EVT Certification
  • ASE Certification
  • Manufacturer specific training/certification (Ford, Caterpillar, Cummins, etc.)

Preferred:

  • Experience with computerized diagnostic and maintenance management system is preferred
  • Class E License

  • The City retains the right to determine equivalencies.
  • Any certifications not possessed at hire, must be obtained before the employee is removed from probation in order to continue employment with the City.

Qualifications

Must be physically able to operate a truck, welding machine, drill press, back hoe, wrecker, mechanical, carpentry, welding, and machine tools, mops and brooms, sand blaster and automotive test equipment. Must be able to exert up to fifty pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to twenty-five pounds of force frequently, and/or up to ten pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Must be able to lift and/or carry weights of ten to one hundred pounds.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Repairs, overhauls, and maintains a variety of City and Fire Department vehicles to include diesel and gas engines, transmissions, pumps and valves of assigned equipment.

Inspects assigned equipment, diagnoses noise, electrical and mechanical problems and determines the extent of repairs.

Maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs air, brakes, electrical and hydraulic systems; maintains and repairs components in fire pump system.

Designs and fabricates specialized equipment; performs welding, replaces or rebuilds needed parts and equipment as necessary.

Maintains, diagnoses, and repairs hydraulic, electrical, control, air, and brake systems on fire engines, specialty service equipment, construction equipment, heavy trucks, etc.

Performs major repairs for gasoline and diesel engine vehicles and heavy equipment, including mechanical defects such as engine, hydraulic, electrical, computer, air conditioning, tire, drive train, brakes (hydraulic and air), steering, suspension, axles, front-ends, transmissions, cooling systems, and/or related systems.

Repairs heavy duty vehicles and construction equipment, commercial trucks, electrical generators, compactors, backhoes, Class 8 dump trucks, recycle trucks, residential and commercial garbage trucks, track-hoes, street sweepers, vac trucks, crane trucks, wheel loaders forklifts, and other hydraulic equipment.

Performs senior mechanic duties including assisting, instructing, assigning and reviewing work, maintaining standards, and coordinating vehicle/equipment maintenance activities.

Assists in the preparation and review of specifications for vehicles, construction equipment and mechanical equipment purchases. Verifies equipment meets specifications at time of delivery.

Evaluates and maintains inventory for automotive parts and supplies to ensure availability of parts and materials to service the needs of the City Fleet; contacts vendors and arranges for deliveries; prepares requisitions.

Assists with the review of city vehicles, equipment and other property to phase out any surplus or defective property.

Responsible for various preventative maintenance duties such as changing oil, fluids, belts, hoses, tires, filters, etc., and performing greasing, cleaning, and other routine tasks.

Performs wrecker service and responds to emergency calls; performs duties on an on-call basis as assigned for emergency repairs. Determines the disposition of road repair needed; performs or initiates corrective action, as needed, i.e. changing tires, jump starting vehicles, towing, ec.

Receives daily repair sheets, generates work orders, reviews maintenance records, safety records, OSHA reports, etc. Updates records and submits completed work orders for close-out.

Maintains work areas in a clean and orderly manner to promote effective and safe operations.

Experience and ability to use diagnostic computer and software from various manufacturers.

Utilizes a wide variety of tools in the performance of duties such as mechanic's tools, welding tools, machine tools, hand tools, pneumatic tools, automotive diagnostic/testing computers, etc.; operates a truck, welding machine, etc. Ability to operate various trucks and heavy equipment, including: welding machine, backhoe, trackhoe, commercial truck, tractor, forklift, wrecker, etc.

Maintains records of maintenance, test and work performed on a computer-based system.

Punctual, regular, and reliable attendance is an essential responsibility of each employee at the City of North Myrtle Beach.

ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Picks up and delivers equipment to outside vendors for repairs.

Performs other related duties as required.

All employees of the municipality shall learn the emergency operations procedures for their respective department and position and execute these duties fully during times of emergency. This may or may not include assignment to the Emergency Operations Center (EOC).
