Job Description

** THIS IS A PROMOTIONAL OPPURTUNITY**

The Office of Chief Medical Examiner investigates cases of persons who die within New York City from criminal violence, by accident, by suicide, suddenly when in apparent health, when unattended by a physician, in a correctional facility or in any suspicious or unusual manner or where an application is made pursuant to law for a permit to cremate a body of a person.

Candidates must be a permanent Evidence and Property Control Specialist.

Under administrative direction, with latitude for independent initiative and decision making, incumbent will perform the following duties but are not limited to:

- Organizes workflow and is responsible for EPCS I assignments and work performance.
- Communicates information to staff and other OCME staff.
- Prepares performance evaluations for staff and submits them to management for review.
- Trains and mentors assigned staff.
- Supervises activities of EPCS Is and initiates progressive discipline as necessary.
- Prior experience assisting MEs in the autopsy suite by collecting, receiving and inventorying property obtained during autopsy.
- Operates vehicles in the performance of evidence and property control duties to ensure vehicle safety.
- Inspects vehicles to ensure the removal of all evidence that is retrieved from NYPD or other law enforcement agencies.
- Operates computer terminal to input and retrieve information to ascertain the disposition of cases.
- Perform all duties under Assignment Level I, when necessary
- Other duties as assigned.

SPECIAL NOTE:
Selected candidates will be required to provide a DNA sample by swabbing.
This position has been identified as essential. During emergency events, essential positions may require 24-hour availability.
The selected candidates must be able to drive agency vehicles as required.
Must be currently serving in an Evidence and Property control civil service title.

EVIDENCE AND PROPERTY CONTROL - 71022

Qualifications

A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent; and

a. Two years of full-time, satisfactory experience in the areas of security, law enforcement and/or active military duty; or

b. Successful completion of 60 college semester credits at an accredited college or university with at least a 2.0 cumulative index grade point average.

Driver License Requirement: By the time you are appointed to this position, you must have a motor vehicle driver license valid in the State of New York. If you have moving violations, license suspension(s) or an accident record, you may be disqualified. This license must be maintained for the duration of your employment.

Special Patrolman Requirement: At the time of appointment, you must meet the following qualifications for Special Patrolman status (a status given by the New York City Police Department pursuant to Title 38, Chapter 13 of the Rules of the City of New York).

To be eligible for placement in Assignment Level II, candidates must have, in addition to the minimum qualification requirements, at least one year of experience in Assignment Level I or in a supervisory capacity.
