The purpose of the role is to

  • Lead the Ethical Initiatives and Responsible Sourcing team in the integration of existing and new frameworks and initiatives that support ethical, sustainable and transparent value chains to support commercial projects, while meeting existing and emerging legislative requirements not only in the UK, but across key producer, consumer and manufacturing markets, including sanction risks, as well as the expectations of relevant external stakeholders, including end clients, NGOs and others scrutinising the jewellery sector and value chain.
  • Lead establishing and implementing ethical and due diligence strategies related to the diamond value chain.
  • Provide leadership, advice and direction to the Ethical Initiatives and Responsible Sourcing team in support of the legislative and commercial commitments covering AML and Business Integrity issues, ethical practices and responsible sourcing standards and policy.
  • Contribute to team development, motivation and engagement.
  • Lead and provide technical expertise, solutions, recommendations and management of ethical standards.
  • Benchmark BPP standards against best practice standards and make recommendations to elevate and align the BPPs in consideration of meeting stakeholder expectations while managing business risk.
  • Establish and advise on changes to the BPP Programme
  • Lead establishing human rights due diligence processes, strategies and lead on the implementation of related workstreams.
  • Leading the review and engaging with appropriate internal stakeholders on any changing regulatory or legislative frameworks as they relate to anti-money laundering or other reputational and ethical integrity requirements as applicable to the team’s workstreams.
  • Establish and advise on strategy for new processes, policies, and approaches, including developing criteria and documentation that is implemented into the delivery of the Practice Principles (BPP) Programme.
  • Build the De Beers ‘ethical integrity’ brand through supporting the establishment of the programme requirements for responsible sourcing in the jewellery supply chain that is aligned with the Best Practice Principles Programme and other industry standards.
  • Oversee the implementation of the Responsible Sourcing policies for diamonds, precious metals, minerals and other gemstones across De Beers downstream brands.
  • Support and assist De Beers Group’s responsible sourcing programme for diamonds, precious metals, minerals and other gemstones as part of De Beers Group’s Building Forever Commitments
  • Oversee the Building Forever Reporting Requirements (internal and external) as they relate to BPPs, Human Rights and Responsible Sourcing.
  • Lead on the delivery of the Group’s Modern Slavery Act Statement and other applicable reporting requirements.

Managing due diligence needs across De Beers Group as they relate to ethical, legal and reputational issues, including anti-money laundering, sanctions, human rights, and environmental risks within the context of existing and potential new business relationships.

De Beers BPP Programme:

  • Accountable for review and evolution of the BPP standards in alignment with best practice standards, evolving stakeholder expectations while balancing the business and commercial contexts and wider policy positions (including those subscribed to at Anglo American).
  • Conducting benchmarking exercises amongst relevant standards and establishing equivalency assessments and overseeing their implementation.
  • Accountable for ensuring that the team managing the BPP Programme are supported, trained and resourced and oversee the delivery of the BPP Programme.
  • Responsible for researching and understanding emerging industry risks, and recommending and implementing the necessary changes to requirements, standards, and processes through the annual review of the suite of BPP Documentation.
  • Developing an education and training strategy as well as overseeing the development of training materials and the appropriate rollout to participants and auditors on any changes to the BPP programme in line with new requirements, uplifts or general training for existing requirements.
  • Oversee changes and developments to the BPP online SMART system ensuring that the system is lean and user friendly as well as cost effective.
  • Providing strategic input and overseeing the delivery of relevant reports for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Provide a vital communications link between De Beers, its diamond client, diamond brokers and third parties such as auditors and trade bodies/initiatives.
  • Provide strategic input into contracts and the activities of independent third- and fourth-party service provider companies.
  • Provides recommendations and solutions for consideration by BERC Co (or equivalent) relating to strategic changes, such as standards, scope and auditors.
  • Reviews and provides input to third-party reports for relevant internal and external stakeholders.
  • Engages with the RJC and other relevant stakeholders to support objectives.
  • Support the delivery of Building Forever commitments.
  • Investigate and recommend creative solutions to unplanned events impacting consumer confidence issues in respect of industry ethics.
  • Manage and advise Business Units on any bespoke diamond-related ethical value chain initiatives (such as with De Beers Auctions) and advise on their creation, implementation and evolution.
  • Identify gaps in policies, system design, regulatory implementation that impact the business and identify and implement solutions to address the gaps in issues relating to ethical integrity and reputation (e.g. human rights, anti-corruption, social and environmental impacts).

De Beers Responsible Sourcing Programme for Diamonds, Precious Metals, Minerals and other Gemstones

  • Leads the delivery and implementation of De Beers Group’s Building Forever framework as applicable to the BPPs, Human Rights and Responsible Sourcing.
  • Input into and make recommendations on the development of new ethical and sustainable value chain initiatives to accommodate changing business requirements.
  • Oversees the implementation of De Beers Group’s Responsible and Ethical Sourcing Policy for Diamonds and De Beers Group’s Responsible Sourcing Policy for Precious Metals, Minerals and other Gemstones.
  • Managing Building Forever internal and external reporting commitments, including into the De Beers Group Annual Sustainability Report as well as all internal Building Forever reporting requirements.
  • Oversee the establishment of a system and actively monitors the impact of implementing both the Responsible and Ethical Sourcing Policy for Diamonds and the Responsible Sourcing Policy for Precius Metals, Minerals and other Gemstones.
  • Engagement with relevant business units to communicate the programme requirements, its implementation and report on progress.
  • Support the Head of Department on the governance review of Business, Ethics, Risk and Conduct Committee (BERC Co) (or equivalent), including updating the Terms of Reference, and support its implementation in its new evolved state.
  • Leading the implementation and administration of the new Programme’s requirements via:
    • System development and evolution to meet the new needs.
    • Support in standards development, definitions and assessment.
    • Providing strategic input and overseeing the development of educational materials including training and other written materials, as well as overseeing the appropriate rollout to participants and auditors.
    • Build and deliver reporting frameworks internally and externally.
    • Provides recommendations and solutions for consideration by BERC Co stemming from infringements or issues identified through the responsible sourcing workstream, as well as being responsible for implementing decisions made by BERC Co (or equivalent).
  • Oversee the development of infrastructure required to deliver new ethical and sustainable value chain initiatives within existing IT platform to build bespoke sections devoted to the new initiatives’ participants and users.
  • Oversee the creation of reporting templates and reporting systems for the necessary due diligence and ethical integrity reporting outcomes offered under the new initiatives.
  • Manages the clear communication and understanding of new initiatives throughout internal cross functional work-streams.
  • Investigates and recommends creative solutions to unplanned events impacting consumer confidence issues in respect of industry ethics.
  • Seek to identify opportunities to streamline and create efficiencies based on existing frameworks, systems and policies.
  • Engagement with relevant trade associations to better understand responsible sourcing risks.
  • Lead any cross-recognition initiatives as they arise.
  • Consistently ensure alignment with broader business goals and frameworks, including Building Forever.
  • Contribute the appropriate reporting, presentation, and strategies relevant to the Building Forever framework as they align with these objectives.

Due Diligence:

  • Responsible for providing strategic input and overseeing the overall implementation of De Beers due diligence requirements, both in the context of anti-money laundering and sanctions as well as reputational and ethical integrity including supporting applicable De Beers Group Business Units (e.g. Global Sightholder Sales, De Beers Jewellers, De Beers Forevermark and Lightbox) in ensuring their compliance with applicable AML legal requirements.
  • Overseeing the Financial Intelligence Act workstreams in accordance with the Service Level Agreement.
  • Overseeing the review of Service Level Agreement amendments, evolution and/or creation.
  • Leading the review and engaging with appropriate internal stakeholders on any changing regulatory or legislative frameworks as they relate to anti-money laundering or other reputational and ethical integrity requirements as applicable to the team’s workstreams.
  • Establishing the strategy to set a formalised due diligence function, working closely with relevant internal stakeholders.
  • Oversight of the development of processes and procedures which seek to address money laundering and reputational risks as identified by the business or business units.

Human Rights

  • Oversee relevant human rights reporting requirements, including the Modern Slavery Act statement and other related reporting disclosures on human rights (e.g., Canadian Forced Labour and Child Labour in Supply Chains Act).
  • Driving the development, delivery and implementation of De Beers Group Human Rights Framework as underpinned by the critical foundation in the Building Forever ambition.
  • Leading the De Beers Group Human Rights Working Group which seeks to engage and coordinate with relevant subject matter experts.
  • Liaising with Anglo American and other De Beers counterparts as applicable on shared human rights workstreams.
  • Contribute to the development, delivery, and implementation of human rights training to be delivered to applicable colleagues/other stakeholders.
  • Engaging with relevant third-party organisations as necessary

Communicates De Beers Consumer Confidence and Corporate Responsibility strategies in context of ethical integrity:

  • Manages alignment of all relevant stakeholders.
  • Provides advisory to trade associations, regulatory bodies world-wide on current diamond industry ethical business issues under guidance of manger.
  • Briefs De Beers staff world-wide and gives advice and information on matters relating to responsible sourcing, ESG in value chains, ethical and business integrity, human rights, due diligence, AML and sanctions.
  • Accountable for overseeing and advising on changes and updates required to DTC.com to ensure compliance with OECD and other responsible sourcing and ethical integrity requirements.
  • Undertakes special projects as required.

Responsible for leading a team of 3 people and:

  • Overseeing their priorities and key work responsibilities.
  • Allocating and delegating work appropriately, including any ad hoc special projects.
  • Providing training and support to ensure they can fulfil their role competently.
  • Being accountable for the delivery of their key roles and responsibilities.

Qualifications

  • Experience in managing ethical/ESG value chain initiatives.
  • Proven experience in programme and project management.
  • Proven experience in ESG /Human Rights /Due Diligence policy setting and implementation.
  • Experience in multi-stakeholder engagement.
  • Experience in handling complex systems and workstreams.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills is essential.
  • Sound knowledge of business principles and international standards relevant to the industry (e.g. human rights and anti-discrimination laws, labour law) is essential.
  • Numerate with good presentation skills.
  • Strong Knowledge of the Responsible jewellery Council requirements.
  • Travel may be required.
