We are seeking an Estimator at our corporate office in Albany, NY, or in a remote position.

The position assumes the responsibilities of an estimator performing cost estimates for HV and MV electrical power systems, including electrical power substations and transmission/distribution systems, primarily on an EPC/turnkey/design-build basis.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities of the Position

  • Practical knowledge and understanding of Engineering/Procurement/Construction types of projects.
  • Understanding unique requirements and constraints of multiple types of projects, including engineering-only, EPC, utility, renewable, industrial, commercial, etc.
  • Interface and coordinate with other departments, including preconstruction, engineering, procurement, project management and field services.
  • Work independently to develop cost estimates and project budgets for substation and transmission line projects
  • Review client RFP documents to determine scope, schedule and design criteria
  • Review preliminary design drawings and documents
  • Develop cost estimates for internal labor efforts, including engineering, project management, procurement, admin, etc.
  • Develop detailed material takeoffs
  • Develop equipment and subcontractor bid packages/requests to solicit pricing
  • Respond to vendor and subcontractor RFI’s
  • Evaluate and levelize vendor and subcontractor bids for use in cost estimates
  • Assist in development of project proposals
  • Present cost estimates to department and company leadership
  • Assist in client bid evaluation phase, participating in cost reviews, RFI responses, etc.
  • Assist in contract development on awarded projects, ensuring contract scope and price aligns with estimate
  • Assist in project kickoff/turnover to project execution team
  • Compile and track historical bids and project execution costs for reference/use on future bids

  • Not required.

Educational Requirements:

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Power Engineering, Civil Engineering and/or related Engineering Technologies is preferred

Experience & Training Requirements:

  • 3+ Years’ Experience in cost estimating of Transmission Level Substations and Transmission Lines (13.8kV – 500 kV) including:
    • All aspects of EPC substation/transmission projects
    • Internal engineering costs
    • Equipment and material costs
    • Construction labor and materials costs
    • Testing and Commissioning costs
    • Overhead and general conditions costs
    • Project Management, administrative and project support costs
  • Codes and Standards: NEC, NFPA, NESC, OSHA, NERC, RUS, IEEE, ANSI, IEC, Local and Federal Building Codes
  • Familiarity with reviewing preliminary substation and transmission line electrical drawings and calculations to generate cost estimates.
  • Ability to conceptualize the needs of substation and transmission line projects based on project RFPs, many times with limited to no detailed information or drawings.
  • Highly motivated and able to execute tasks independently.
  • Good written and verbal communications skills.
  • Ability to work well with others in a team setting.
  • Skilled in practice of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations and preparing and presenting recommendations.
  • Skilled in problem solving in time-sensitive situations

Computer Skills

  • Demonstrated experience in the following software programs:
  • Microsoft Word – Intermediate
  • Microsoft Excel – Intermediate
  • Microsoft Outlook – Intermediate
  • Microsoft Project – Basic
  • AutoCAD (2015 or later) – Basic
  • Bid2Win or other estimating software - Intermediate

Travel Requirements:

  • Estimators’ travel level is typically 10%.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift / move equipment up to 15 lbs.
