OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The Houston Parks and Recreation Department is dedicated to building a sustainable community and enhancing the quality of urban life by providing safe well-maintained parks and offering affordable programming for our community. To achieve this mission, HPARD seeks an Equipment Worker (Light) to join its Greenspace Management team. The potential candidate will perform the following:

  • Operate and maintain a single flail mower, deck mower or tractor (45 HP or less) on city parks and medians.
  • Will perform grounds keeping duties including litter pickup, trimming, edging, and push-mowing.
  • Will operate grounds maintenance equipment (e.g., edgers, weed eaters, etc.), always observing and implementing safety procedures.
  • Assist with chemical spraying and special projects, as well as maintaining and cleaning equipment, tools, and restrooms.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • This position is designated among essential personnel under the City of Houston's Emergency Management Policy.

PHYSICAL EFFORT:
The position requires stooping, bending and/or lifting of items of up to 30 pounds with occasional periods of
walking on rough surfaces.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
There are routine exposures to significant levels of heat, cold, moisture and air pollution. The position may
involve periodic exposure to chemical substances and physical trauma of a minor nature such as cuts,
bruises and minor burns.

PHYSICAL SKILL:
Requires the ability to make fairly complex coordinated and sequenced motor movements in response to
quickly changing external stimuli.

Examples of duties

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to read, write, add, subtract and follow oral and/or basic written instructions as might normally be acquired through 9 to 11 years of formal schooling.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Six months of experience in the operation of plant or automotive equipment and attachments are required.

LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
May be required to have a valid Class A or B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and comply with the City of Houston's policy on driving based on the type of equipment the
individual is assigned to operate.

Qualifications

  • Applicants who can work Day, Evening, Night, Weekend, and Holiday Shifts.
  • Grounds Maintenance Experience highly preferred.
  • A valid Driver's License and comply with the City of Houston's policy on driving (AP 2-2).


**Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.**
