Inspects, troubleshoots, maintains and installs mechanical, electrical, electro-mechanical, pneumatic and hydraulic equipment for the repair and maintenance of all vehicles and mobile equipment.

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 7:00am - 3:30pm

Key Responsibilities

  • Performs preventive, emergency and corrective maintenance on all vehicle motors, transmissions and auxiliary support systems.
  • Performs similar maintenance functions on mobile equipment such as lawn mowers, weedwackers, air compressors, steam cleaners, wreckers, prime mover for electrical generator, porta and versa lifts and other treatment plant equipment.
  • Inspects and troubleshoots vehicle related systems, equipment and support systems using testing devices.
  • Plans, lays out work, selects appropriate parts and materials and obtains necessary tools and machines for the job as specified by the work order.
  • Operates a variety of motor vehicles and equipment (including front-end loaders, backhoes, mobile cranes, truck tractors, etc.) to diagnose and check work.
  • Performs work in a safe and professional manner.
  • Assists in the development of cost estimates for repairs, rebuilding and/or reconstruction of equipment.
  • Inspects vehicles and mobile equipment on a scheduled basis to ensure proper maintenance of each vehicle.
  • Reports and documents results of inspections and work performed.
  • Trains peers and subordinates as requested.
  • Performs clean up and housekeeping in work area for tools, and equipment.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Basic reading, writing, mathematical, scientific and oral communication skills as normally acquired through a high school education or the equivalent; and
  • Satisfactory completion of a certified Equipment Repair Specialist apprenticeship training program, or a similar formal training program, or one (1) year of specialized technical education in Auto Mechanics and at least three (3) years of related experience; or
  • Any equivalent combination of education/training and/or experience.
  • A valid Massachusetts Commercial Drivers License Class B with related endorsements for vehicle equipmentClass A preferred.
  • A valid Massachusetts Office of Public Safety and Inspections Hoisting Engineers license with endorsements 1B, 2A, 4G.
  • This position has been designated as essential in instances where the MWRA Executive Director requires essential personnel to report to work such as inclement weather or other emergencies.

Knowledge and Abilities

  • Working knowledge of the principles and theory of vehicle related combustion engines, drives, transmissions, controls and support systems, including diesel engines and related equipment, and the tools, instruments and methods for their repair and maintenance.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and, set up and work from wiring diagrams, sketches, blueprints and vendor manuals to safety assemble, erect, troubleshoot, install and repair components, parts or assemblies as required for the repair and maintenance of a wide variety of vehicles and related equipment.
  • Working knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety practices common to the trade, to include satisfactory completion of MWRA safety training in safe techniques for the use of hoists, rigging, and material handling equipment.
  • Familiar with welding techniques common to the trade.
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in an office environment. The employee occasionally works in outside weather conditions. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibration. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock.
The noise level in the work environment is usually loud in field settings, and moderately quiet in office settings.
