SUPERVISORY WORK: Supervises

Under general supervision, operates self-contained hot-mix patcher operation in repairing small "pothole" failures through a semi-skilled or manual unskilled process. May operate trucks of 2½ ton to 10 cu. yd. (46,000 GWV) and other equipment as required. As crew leader, employee is responsible for job site supervision of Utility Worker.

  • Generally responsible for the hot-mix patcher operation in the repair of "potholes" and other similar repairs. May be required to do manual work to assist in the performance of various tasks
  • Operates various attachments on the patcher unit (jackhammer, tamper, and spray bar).
  • Calculation of hot-mix needed on a daily basis, as well as obtaining all supplies necessary for the day’s work assignment.
  • Responsible for barricading and coning of work area as well as retrieval of same upon completion of job.
  • Excavate and repair failed area in a prescribed manner.
  • Clean and make minor repairs/adjustments to patch unit and truck.
  • Proper completion of daily job reports.
  • Operates truck-mounted snowplow or loader during winter emergencies.
  • May operate equipment in other comparable pay categories or be willing to train if necessary.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Minimum eighth (8th) grade education with two (2) years’ experience in operating light and medium equipment and trucks and including one (1) year experience in responsible asphalt work. Some college desirable, high school graduation preferred. Requires possession of a valid Texas Class "A" Commercial Driver’s License with "N" (tanker) endorsement. Completion of at least sixteen (16) hours training in safety and barricading within probationary year is required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Requires good working knowledge of medium-sized truck equipped with heated asphalt container and attachments to include jackhammer, power tamp, and spray wand.
  • Should be familiar with all hand tools, both manual and power, jackhammer, and power tamper.
  • During inclement weather, may use truck-mounted snow plow, sand/salt spreader, and front-end loader (2 ½ cu. yd. capacity).
  • Ability to integrate well with others.
  • Good physical condition required due to considerable manual labor to perform shoveling and raking of asphalt mix.
  • May require some light to medium lifting (30-50 lbs.) during minor repair or adjustment to equipment but could involve heavier lifting (50-1101bs.) when performing manual tasks.
  • Extensive stop and go driving in city traffic resulting in constant exposure to traffic and associated hazards.
  • This position is subject to 24-hour emergency call out.

Amarillo is the 14th-largest city in the state of Texas, the largest in the Texas Panhandle, and the seat of Potter County. A portion of the city extends into Randall County.
