The hiring range for this position is $40,873.48 (minimum salary) to $56,289.00 (midpoint of range) dependent upon qualifications for a Equipment Operator I.
The hiring range for this position is $42,942.69 (minimum salary) to $59,138.61 (midpoint of range) dependent upon qualifications for a Equipment Operator II.
The hiring range for this position is $45,116.68 (minimum salary) to $62,132.53 (midpoint of range) dependent upon qualifications for a Heavy Equipment Operator.
The purpose of this position is to perform responsible skilled work in the operation of medium motorized and specialized equipment in the Environmental Services division. Successful performance results in completion of construction, maintenance, and repair projects.
The work consists of related duties in the operation of medium and specialized equipment used in the construction, maintenance, and repair. Physical obstacles in the field contribute to the complexity of the work.
Examples of duties
Equipment Operator I
Major Duties
- Operate medium equipment as defined by the City's garage to perform construction responsibilities;
- Service and make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment;
- Perform other responsibilities related to operations as assigned;
- Operate heavy equipment as a trainee;
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Guidelines
- Guidelines include relevant city and department policies and procedures, OSHA guidelines, and federal, state and local regulations. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.
Supervisory/Management Responsibility
Equipment Operator II
Major Duties
- Operate heavy equipment as defined by the City's garage to perform construction responsibilities.
- Service and make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment.
- Perform other responsibilities related to operations as assigned.
- Supervise and/or train subordinate Equipment Operator I's or other Operating Technicians.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.

Supervisory/Management Responsibility

Heavy Equipment Operator
Major Duties
- Operates heavy and specialized equipment in support of the department;
- Operates dump truck, bucket truck, tractor trailer, tractor, and hydraulic boom.
- Makes minor repairs and adjustments to equipment as necessary.
- Responds to after-hours emergency calls.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.

- Guidelines include city ordinances, policies, and procedures, relevant federal and state laws and regulations, OSHA standards, and supervisory instructions. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.
Supervisory/Management Responsibility
- This position has direct supervision over assigned personnel.
Qualifications
Equipment Operator I
Education/Experience Requirements
- Any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
- Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated and a Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six months of hire.
Equipment Operator II
Education/Experience Requirements
- Any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
- Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated and a Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six months of hire.
Knowledge Requirements
- Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of heavy and/or specialized equipment utilized;
- Thorough knowledge of traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation;
- Knowledge of relevant state and federal laws and regulations;
- Knowledge of city ordinances, policies, and procedures;
- Knowledge of the geography of the city and of assigned routes;
- Knowledge of relevant departmental policies, safety procedures, and guidelines.
- Skill in the use of equipment.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions;
- Ability to perform manual labor for extended period, often under unfavorable weather conditions;
- Ability to work independently without close supervision;
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and supervisors.
Heavy Equipment Operator
Education/Experience Requirements
- Ability to read, write and perform basic mathematical calculations.
- Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
- Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated and a Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six months of hire.
Knowledge Requirements
- Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of heavy equipment dump truck, tractor trailer, tractor, and hydraulic boom.
- Knowledge of traffic laws and regulations.
- Knowledge of relevant safety procedures and guidelines.
- Skill in the use of heavy equipment such as dump truck, tractor trailer, tractor, and hydraulic boom.

Supplemental information
- The work is typically performed at field sites while standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping.
- The employee may be subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions.
- May be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, irritating chemicals, and cold or inclement weather.
- The work requires the use of protective devices such as gloves.
- The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and must be able to distinguish between shades of color.
