GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK:

Performs intermediate, semiskilled work in the operation of vehicles, light to medium construction equipment, and hand powered tools used to maintain streets, sidewalks, swales, drainage systems, rights-of-way, and other public infrastructure. Work is performed under regular supervision.

Examples of duties

  • Operates dump trucks and other equipment used to transport dirt, sand, stone, gravel, asphalt, rock, supplies, and related materials.
  • Operates light trucks to transport tools, equipment, materials, and supplies to and from job sites.
  • Operates tractors and other equipment to cut grass, edge bicycle paths, trim trees, and assist with drainage-pipe repairs.
  • Conducts required pre-trip and post-trip inspections of assigned vehicles and equipment.
  • Reports equipment deficiencies, mechanical problems, unsafe conditions, accidents, and property damage to the appropriate supervisor.
  • Follows established safety procedures and traffic laws while operating City vehicles and equipment.
  • Operates light to medium construction equipment such as backhoes, front-end loaders, dump trucks, tractors, skid steers, rollers, mini-excavators, and other specialized public works equipment.
  • Performs general maintenance and construction work as necessary.
  • Assists with street, stormwater, drainage, right-of-way, and grounds-maintenance activities.
  • Assists in the setup and maintenance of traffic control devices in accordance with Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) standards to ensure safe work zones for employees and the public.
  • Performs manual labor in support of division operations, including lifting, digging, shoveling, material handling, and related field work.
  • May be required to work overtime, weekends, holidays, and emergency call-out assignments as operational need dictate.
  • Performs related tasks as required.

Qualifications

Knowledge of

  • The principles and practices involved in operating and servicing trucks and related light motorized construction and maintenance equipment.
  • Traffic laws and regulations governing vehicle and equipment operations.
  • Occupational hazards and the safety precautions required for the proper operation of construction and maintenance equipment.

Skilled In

  • Safely operating assigned vehicles and equipment.
  • Understanding and following oral and written instructions.
  • Mechanical aptitude and performing minor equipment repairs and adjustments.

Ability to

  • Perform physically demanding work under varying environmental conditions.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, coworkers, and the public.
  • Complete required vehicle and equipment inspections, reports, and other operational records.

Supplemental information

  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and six (6) months of experience in the operation of motorized equipment.
  • Possession of valid State of Florida Class "B" CDL driver's license with no more than six (6) points in the last three (3) years.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Abstained from the use of cigarettes, cigars, and other tobacco products for at least one year prior to date of hire and shall abstain from the use of tobacco products at all times during the period of their employment with the City while both on and off duty.
