The purpose of the class is to learn and operate light to medium equipment and trucks to support various Public Works operations including, but not limited to, the maintenance and/or construction of County roads and stormwater systems; to collect and transport solid waste and recyclables; to maintain assigned equipment; and to perform other work as required. This class works according to set procedures under close supervision.

Work is performed in an environment with heavy equipment and machinery that could result in bodily harm to co-workers or others.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time position; typical work hours and days are Monday through Thursday, 10.5hrs each day. Some flexibility in hours is allowed, but employees must be available during the following “core” work hours: Nov-May (7am – 5:30pm) and Jun-Oct (6am-4:30pm).
Employees must work 40 hours each week to maintain fulltime status. Must be available to work holidays and weekends during emergencies. This is a safety sensitive position and employees holding this position have the responsibility for their own safety and the safety of others. This position is subject to random drug testing.

Dorchester County operates under a Council Administrator form of government and has 766 full‐time positions. A seven‐member County Council is elected by district and provides policy direction to the County. The County Council appoints the County Administrator, the County Clerk, the County Attorney, and the Delinquent Tax Collector.
The County Administrator is responsible for the administration of all departments under the control of the County Council. The present County administrator has been in the position since 2004 and is assisted by a Deputy County Administrator and a Chief Financial Officer.
