Distinguishing Characteristics:
This class is distinguished by its responsibility for planning and conducting driver education and training classes for operators of heavy motorized equipment primarily for the purposes of developing, upgrading, and maintaining operative skills.

Training and Experience: A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from high school and three (3) years of experience in driver training and/or accident prevention activities or other related activities involving instructing, advising on or evaluating motor vehicle driver performance and two (2) years of work experience operating heavy construction equipment.
License Requirement: Possession of a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL), Class A; applicants with an out-of-state CDL must transfer to a Hawai'i issued CDL by the time of appointment, candidates must possess a good driving record certified by a traffic abstract confirming no DUI convictions, license revocations, or suspensions for three (3) years preceding and no moving violations for one (1) year preceding, which must be presented at the time of the interview, and a current Department of Transportation Medical Examiner's Certificate.
Prior to completion of probationary period, possession of applicable endorsement(s).
Knowledge of: The nomenclature, purposes, operating characteristics, and capabilities of various types of motorized equipment, including crawler-mounted equipment; hazards and safety features, devices and precautions applicable to the operation of motorized equipment; the effects of varying field conditions on equipment performance; the theory of the internal combustion engine; preventive and general maintenance practices relating to motorized equipment; instructional methods and techniques; traffic laws and ordinances and highway safety; recordkeeping and report writing.
Ability to: Plan, organize, schedule, and conduct classroom and practical training for operators of various types of motorized equipment; determine operator training requirements for various types of motorized equipment; climb on and operate/demonstrate the proper operation of various types of motorized equipment; explain the purposes and functions of equipment components, and detect and identify common malfunctions and their causes; objectively evaluate and rate operator performance; set-up and maintain records and prepare reports; express ideas clearly and concisely; deal effectively with trainees, supervisors, and resource persons from other agencies; monitor program effectiveness and recommend/implement changes for improvement.
