TxDOT's Fort Worth District is seeking an Equipment Mechanic II or III based in Granbury, TX. This position supports TxDOT's mission by maintaining and repairing a wide range of wheeled vehicles, including passenger vehicles, medium- and heavy-duty trucks, and construction equipment. Fleet mechanics play a critical role in keeping Texas moving. We support daily operations and respond to emergency and inclement weather events that impact communities across the state. This position is open to both experienced mechanics and those looking to develop their skills in a structured, supportive environment.

Salary Grade:

Equipment Mechanic II: $50,000 - $60,000

Equipment Mechanic III: $60,000 - $70,000

Performs advanced repair/maintenance and inspection related work for fleet vehicles and equipment in the Fleet Operations Division Shop or a District Maintenance Section. Inspects work performed by shop mechanics and/or contracted vendors. Work may require maintenance and repair of heavy equipment used in the construction of highways/bridges. Work may require contact with other governmental agencies and private contractors. Employees at this level perform independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Equipment Mechanic II Essential Duties:

• Checks lighting and wiring mechanisms to ensure proper functioning of headlights, spotlights, tail lights and parking lights.

• Completes repair order paperwork and accurately enters data into fleet information management system.

• Maintains and repairs heavy equipment used in construction and maintenance of highways/bridges.

• Orders, picks up and delivers parts, materials, tools, and operates equipment and vehicles to include heavy equipment.

• Performs preventive maintenance, inspections and repairs on motor vehicles/equipment; as required moves items related to these activities.

• Troubleshoots, tests and repairs electrical systems, electronic ignitions and fuel injection systems.

• Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Equipment Mechanic III Essential Duties (in addition to Equipment Mechanic II):

• Adjusts brakes and replaces brake system parts to include air brake and anti-locking systems

• Analyzes and interprets computerized diagnostic equipment information.

• Handles and disposes of environmentally hazardous materials in accordance with federal and state laws.

Minimum Qualifications:

Equipment Mechanic II Experience 4 years in automotive, medium/heavy truck, or construction equipment diagnostics and repair. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent).

Equipment Mechanic III Experience 7 years in automotive, medium/heavy truck, or construction equipment diagnostics and repair. (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent)

• Associate's degree in Automotive and/or Diesel Technology may substitute for 2 year's experience.
• Certificates of course completion from a Technical Training Institute in Automotive and Diesel Technology may substitute for experience on a year for year basis.

Licenses and Certifications

• Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
• Must obtain a Commercial Class "A" Driver's License or have obtained a CDL "A” License with "N" endorsement, within 120 calendar days after 6 months of continuous service.
• Mtr Veh St Inspector-Licensed. If performing State safety vehicle inspections must have or obtain a State Inspector's license.
• Mandatory: Safety Impact Certificate

Equipment Mechanic II Competencies:

• Mechanical equipment operation and maintenance

• Basic vehicle mechanics, maintenance and repair procedures

Proficient skill in

• Using applicable hand and power tools, equipment, and mechanical devices of the trade

• Using applicable electronic test equipment

• Maintaining a safe and effective working relationship with others

Equipment Mechanic III Competencies (in addition to Equipment Mechanic II):

Expert skill in

• Diagnostic skills with automotive and diesel computer applications

• Troubleshooting, repairing and calibrating electronic and mechanical components and subsystems

• Brake repairs to include anti-locking systems, mechanical brakes, air brakes and hydraulic brake systems

Proficient skill in

• Mechanical repair procedures for diesel, gasoline, CNG and LPG engines

• Diagnosing problems and repairing equipment to include electronic and mechanical components and subsystems according to defined codes and specifications

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

• Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions

• Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour

• Subject to hazards-moving vehicles/mechanical parts, high places/heat, or chemicals

• Subject to atmospheric conditions-fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, poor ventilation

• Subject to air and/or skin exposure to oils and other cutting fluids

• Required to wear protective gear-respirator, hard hat, or other device

• Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs

• Stooping-bending body downward and forward by bending spine at waist

• Standing-prolonged periods of time

• Close Visual Acuity-work includes data/figures; view a computer screen; extensive reading

• Visual Acuity-operate motor vehicles and/or heavy equipment

• Required to work under exposure to inclement weather conditions.
• Required to wear personal protective equipment provided by employer and comply with all safety requirements.
