Performs repair and maintenance related work for fleet vehicles and equipment in a District Maintenance Section. Work requires maintenance and repair of heavy equipment used in construction of highways/bridges and inspecting work performed by contracted vendors. Assists the maintenance section during emergency operations. Work may require contact with other governmental agencies and private contractors. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments, however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Essential Duties for an Equipment Mechanic I or II:

• Maintains and repairs heavy equipment used in construction and maintenance of bridges/highways.

• Analyzes and interprets computerized diagnostic equipment information.

• Adjusts brakes and replaces brake system parts to include air brake and anti-locking systems.

• Checks lighting and wiring mechanisms to ensure proper functioning of headlights, spotlights, taillights and parking lights.

• Troubleshoots, tests and repairs electrical systems, electronic ignitions and fuel injection systems.

• Orders, picks up and delivers parts, materials, tools, and operates equipment and vehicles to include heavy equipment.

• Completes repair order paperwork and accurately enters data into fleet information management system.

• Assists with traffic control; places and gathers cones, warning signs and barricades; flags traffic.

• Sands or cleans bridges and roads, posts warning signs, helps the public and performs other work as directed during emergency situations such as floods, tornadoes, snowstorms, and hazardous material spills.

• Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Equipment Mechanic I: 2 years experience in automotive, medium/heavy truck, or construction equipment diagnostics and repair.

Equipment Mechanic II: 4 years experience in automotive, medium/heavy truck, or construction equipment diagnostics and repair.

(Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

• Associate's degree in Automotive and/or Diesel Technology may substitute for 2 year's experience.
• Certificates of course completion from a Technical Training Institute in Automotive and Diesel Technology may substitute for experience on a year for year basis.

Licenses and Certifications

• Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

• Must have a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or have obtained a Class "A" CDL, within 180 calendar days from date of employment.

RequiredCompetencies for an Equipment Mechanic I or II:

• Mechanical equipment operation and maintenance.

• The use of light and heavy equipment.

• Diagnosing problems and repairing equipment to include electronic and mechanical components and subsystems according to defined codes and specifications.

• Using applicable hand and power tools, equipment, and mechanical devices of the trade.

• Brake repairs to include anti-locking systems, mechanical brakes, air brakes and hydraulic brake systems.

• Diagnostic skills with automotive and diesel computer applications.

• Read and interpret electrical diagrams and schematics.

• Maintaining a safe and effective working relationship with others.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

• Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and above 100 degrees for more than one hour

• Subject to noise

• Subject to hazards-moving vehicles/mechanical parts, high places/heat, or chemicals

• Subject to air and/or skin exposure to oils and other cutting fluids

• Required to wear protective gear-respirator, hard hat, or other device

• Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or cary objects up to 25 lbs

• Climbing - ascending/descending ladders, stairs, scaffoldings, ramps, etc.

• Balancing - walking, standing, crouching on various surfaces without falling

• Stooping - bending body downward and forward by bending spine at waist

• Kneeling - bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee(s)

• Repetitive motion - substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and fingers

• Close visual acuity - work includes visual inspection of small defects/parts

• This job has been identified as physically demanding and will require a pre-employment physical.
• Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions. This is a Safety Impact position and will be subject to random drug testing.

• Will be required to work alternate schedules during an emergency response situation such as adverse weather events.

• Must be able to report for duty within 30 minutes of notification on a 24-hour basis to respond to emergency situations.
