Equipment Mechanic I
Performs repair/maintenance and inspection related work for fleet vehicles and equipment in the Fleet Operations Division Shop or a District Maintenance Section. Work may require maintenance and repair of heavy equipment used in construction of highways/bridges and inspecting work performed by contracted vendors. Work may require contact with other governmental agencies and private contractors. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments, however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.
Equipment Mechanic II
Performs advanced repair/maintenance and inspection related work for fleet vehicles and equipment in the Fleet Operations Division Shop or a District Maintenance Section. Inspects work performed by shop mechanics and/or contracted vendors. Work may require maintenance and repair of heavy equipment used in construction of highways/bridges. Work may require contact with other governmental agencies and private contractors. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments, however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.
Essential Duties:
Equipment Mechanic I and II
Adjusts brakes and replaces brake system parts to include air brake and anti-locking systems.
Repairs vehicle air conditioning systems.

Education None
Experience 2 years in automotive, medium/heavy truck, or construction equipment diagnostics and repair. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

Education None

Equipment Mechanic I
Considerable knowledge of:
Mechanical equipment operation and maintenance
Basic vehicle mechanics, maintenance and repair procedures
Applicable industry safety standards, guidelines, and specification codes
Some knowledge of:
State procurement guidelines for parts purchases and P-card use
Proficient skill in:
Brake repairs to include anti-locking systems, mechanical brakes, air brakes and hydraulic brake systems
Equipment Mechanic II
Includes all competencies listed for Equipment Mechanic I as well as:
Extensive knowledge of:
Mechanical equipment operation and maintenance
Basic vehicle mechanics, maintenance and repair procedures
Applicable industry safety standards, guidelines, and specification codes
Considerable knowledge of:
State procurement guidelines for parts purchases and P-card use
Proficient skill in:
Coordinating labor, materials, and equipment
Using applicable electronic test equipment
Mechanical repair procedures for diesel, gasoline, CNG and LPG engines
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
Equipment Mechanic I and II
Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour
Subject to noise
Subject to vibration
Subject to hazards - moving vehicles/mechanical parts, high places/heat, or chemicals
Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs. at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs.
Reaching - extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction
Lifting - raising objects from lower to higher position/horizontally to a different position
Repetitive Motion - substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers
Close Visual Acuity - work includes data/figures; view a computer screen; extensive reading
Visual Acuity - operate motor vehicles and/or heavy equipment
