Summary

There are currently six (6) Equipment Mechanic I vacancies in the Fleet Services Department. This recruitment will be used to fill those vacancies and to establish a Citywide eligible list that may be used to fill future vacancies in both the Fleet Services Department and in the Mesa Fire and Medical Department (MFMD).

Those hired into a vacant Equipment Mechanic I class with Fleet Services on or before 12/31/26 will receive a $2000 sign-on bonus, payable upon the successful completion of Initial Regular Probation (IRP).

Additionally, all hourly employees assigned to work 2nd or 3rd shift within Fleet Services will receive a 2.5% shift incentive premium (applied to the employee's base hourly rate), in addition to the City of Mesa's Shift Differential pay.

The first review of all applications will be on Monday, October 19, 2026, and biweekly thereafter until all vacancies are filled.

An Equipment Mechanic I performs skilled service, maintenance, and repair work on automotive and related equipment, including fleet vehicles, motorcycles, and fire apparatus. Work may also include performing preventative maintenance and repair work on battery operated equipment and two-stroke engines related to fire apparatus; troubleshooting hydraulic and electrical problems; and servicing heavy equipment. Work requires a high degree of technical knowledge, mechanical skill, and the ability to exercise independent judgment in determining repair methods. Assignments may increase in scope and responsibility as increased knowledge and work skills are attained. This class is also responsible for performing related work as required.

The Equipment Mechanic I differs from the Equipment Mechanic II by the latter repairing diesel-powered, heavy-duty equipment, and performing major repair tasks on a more regular basis. Employees assigned to the Fleet Services Department may be assigned a shift including nights, weekends, and holidays. Employees assigned to the Mesa Fire and Medical Department (MFMD) may be required to work evenings, weekends, and holidays based on business needs. Work is subject to rotational stand-by. Employees are required to use the appropriate safety equipment and procedures in performing assigned tasks. The Equipment Mechanic I is supervised by a Shop Foreman or a Shop Supervisor who reviews work through spot check observation, conferences, problems encountered, and overall results achieved. Employees in this class assigned to Fleet Services may progress by noncompetitive promotion to a Senior Equipment Mechanic I after successfully completing original City probation, being employed a minimum of one year as a City of Mesa Equipment Mechanic I, meeting the specific criteria-based promotion requirements, and meeting the minimum qualifications of the Senior Equipment Mechanic I classification. This class is FLSA nonexempt.

Minimum Qualifications Required. High School Diploma or GED. Three (3) years of hands-on automotive maintenance and repair work experience (Fleet Services and Fire and Medical Assignments). Three (3) years of hands-on motorcycle maintenance and repair work experience (Motorcycle Shop Assignment). Successful completion of an industry-recognized automotive or motorcycle maintenance and repair training program may substitute for one (1) year of required hands-on work experience.

Special Requirements. Must possess a valid Class D Arizona Driver’s License by hire or promotion date. Must obtain three (3) ASE Automotive and Light-Truck certificates (A1-A9), an Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) CFD Fleet Emissions Inspector license, and an EPA approved Motor Vehicle Air Conditioning (MVAC) 609 certification within one (1) year of hire or promotion date (Fleet Services and Motorcycle Shop assignments). Must obtain fire apparatus Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) E-0, E-1, ASE A4, and ASE A5 certifications within two (2) years of hire or promotion date (Fire and Medical Assignment). Employees must provide their own hand-tools and rollaway toolbox.

Substance Abuse Testing. Due to the safety and/or security, and sensitive native of this classification, individuals shall be subject to a pre-employment or pre-placement alcohol, drug, and/or controlled substance testing as outlined in City policy and procedures.

Preferred/Desirable Qualifications. Certified as an ASE Certified Master Automobile Technician (ASE A1-A8). Certified as a Motorcycle Mechanic from an industry recognized motorcycle maintenance and repair training program (Motorcycle Shop assignment).
