COMPENSATION

$36.64 - $46.05 hourly + a generous benefits package to include medical, dental, vision and 10% employer paid 401A through VOYA Financial.

*Hiring Salary Range: $36.64 - $41.35 hourly

(starting salary will be within this range based upon qualifications)

An employee of this class performs skilled mechanical, electrical, and related work in the maintenance and repair of transportation equipment. Incumbents in this classification report directly to the Sr. Heavy Equipment Mechanic. The Equipment Mechanic inspects equipment to determine needed repairs; or works with a small group of employees doing such maintenance and repair work; and does related work as assigned.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Important and essential duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

• Repairs, inspects and tests transportation equipment such as passenger cars, trucks, trailers, fire department support vehicles and their auxiliary hydraulic systems, and other transportation equipment to determine needed repairs
• Diagnose internal combustion engine malfunctions, noises or failures
• Removes, repairs, overhauls, and installs engines and transmissions, including heavy duty automatic transmissions
• Slings and rigs equipment
• Inspects, adjusts, and replaces necessary units and related parts, including valves, pistons, gears, and bearings
• Repairs and replaces oil, water, and fuel pumps
• Cleans and repairs carburetors and fuel systems, including diesel fuel systems
• Repairs and overhauls chassis units, including brake systems, such as hydraulic and air types
• Works on brake boosters and valves
• Trues brake drums and brake rotors
• Fits and adjusts brake shoes
• Repairs and overhauls hydraulic pressure systems
• Overhauls and aligns front ends
• Repairs power steering units
• Overhauls steering gear
• Does related work as assigned
• Repairs vehicle air conditioning units
• Repairs exhaust emission control systems
• May repair speedometers
• Operate a tire machine to install tires and balance wheels
• Tunes engines
• Makes compression tests
• Tests coils, condensers; distributors, and other electric parts
• Tests and repairs computer-controlled ignition systems and electronic fuel injection systems
• Tests ignition circuits and times camshafts and ignitions
• Road tests automotive equipment for proper performance
• May install or replace electric wiring and lamps
• May repair starters, generators, and alternators
• Prepares shop orders authorizing repairs, orders parts and/or materials
• Tests and inspects equipment after completion of shop repairs to determine that it is in satisfactory operating condition, corrects minor faults during inspections
• May be required to use a terminal or personal computer
• Makes minor repairs such as replacing glass, repairing door locks, and repairing seat adjustment mechanisms
• May drive a tow truck or a pick-up truck and make emergency repairs in the field
• Uses an engine computer analyzer, exhaust analyzer, compression gauge, vacuum gauge, fuel pump pressure gauge, wheel alignment gauge, drill press, hydraulic press, bench grinder, hone, drum lathe, micrometer, and other machine and hand tools of the trade
• Maintains mower decks and reels on all mowing equipment
• Occasionally uses a lathe in a restricted manner
• Occasionally does acetylene and electric welding and brazing
• May fabricate and install special equipment and parts on vehicles
• May provide direction to and oversee the work of a helper engaged in repair work
• May occasionally be assigned to other duties for training purposes or to meet technological changes or emergencies.

In addition, when Assigned to Electric

• Repairs electric and alternative fuel vehicles including electric shuttle buses.
• Removes, repairs, overhauls and installs AC/DC electrical systems (12, 24, 800v).

PROFILE OF THE IDEAL CANDIDATE

• Possess experience and a track record of accomplishment in all or many of the disciplines outlined previously in this job description
• Knowledge of materials, machinery, tools, and equipment used in the inspection, testing, diagnosis, repair, tune-up, maintenance, and overhaul of transportation equipment such as automobiles, trucks, and trailers
• Knowledge of the operation and components of power train, suspension, electrical, fuel supply, exhaust, and other equipment systems contained in construction, maintenance, and firefighting equipment
• Knowledge of preventative maintenance practices and methods as related to automotive, construction, and firefighting equipment
• When assigned, knowledge and experience repairing and maintaining high voltage, all electric and hybrid-electric vehicles
• Knowledge of welding and brazing processes and practices
• Ability to determine the type and extent of repairs needed and whether the repairs can be done in the field
• Knowledge of safety principles and practices; ability to recognize hazards
• Ability to read, interpret, and work from service manuals and sketches
• Possess the ability to interact effectively and courteously with employees, consultants, contractors, and the general public in an international aviation environment
• Ability to consistently demonstrate the Core Values of OIAA

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Any combination of education, training, and experience that would likely provide the knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform in the position.

• High school diploma or equivalent is required.
• Completion of a recognized apprenticeship as an automotive mechanic; or
• Four years of full-time paid experience in automotive mechanic work; or
• Satisfactory completion of a two-year program in automotive or truck mechanics in a recognized community college, trade, or technical school and two years of full-time paid experience in an automotive mechanic work

LICENSES / CERTIFICATION

• Valid Driver’s License equivalent to a California Class C driver’s license. A valid Class A or B driver’s license may be required within six months of hire
• EPA 609 certification
• ASE automobile and light truck certifications A1 through A9
• Acceptable driving record at time of appointment and throughout employment
• Ability to pass all background / reference checks, knowledge examinations, as well as aptitude tests necessary to obtain an OIAA employee Security Identification Display Area (SIDA) badge at ONT
