Job Description

Imagine a piloted air taxi that takes off vertically, then quietly carries you and your fellow passengers over the congested city streets below, enabling you to spend more time with the people and places that matter most. Since 2009, our team has worked steadily to make this dream a reality. We’ve designed and tested many generations of prototype aircraft capable of serving in a network of electric air taxis. We’re looking for talented, committed individuals to join our team as we push onward toward certifying the Joby aircraft, scaling our manufacturing, and launching our initial commercial service.

Joby Aviation is seeking an Equipment Engineering Manager to make the machines that make our aircraft. You’ll lead a growing team of mechanical engineers, controls engineers, and high-skill build technicians to advance the safety, quality, and throughput of our production lines. The role spans atoms and bits, making the next generation of Powertrain & Electronics Manufacturing’s physical and digital connected machines. The ideal candidate knows equipment engineering is a partner to manufacturing engineers and manufacturing test engineers to set up production to succeed. Come help us build advanced powertrains and electronics equipment as we transform transportation.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with manufacturing and manufacturing test engineers to innovate the process equipment behind our most complex, novel products
  • Lead the architecture, design, build, commissioning, and qualification of manufacturing equipment with both in-house teams and third-party equipment integrators
  • Lead controls engineers to design and deliver semi-automated and fully automated workstations that are connected to our web platforms via the Factory System team’s “kiban pipeline”
  • Lead mechanical engineers to design and deliver manual, semi-automated, and fully automated manufacturing tooling and workstations
  • Lead high-skill multi-disciplinary technicians to build complex electromechanical manual, semi-automated, and fully-automated manufacturing tooling and workstations in a constant feedback loop with the engineers
  • Partner with the Factory Systems team to determine the software and data pipeline interface, go-forward architecture, and development priorities

Required

  • BS in Engineering or a relevant field with 8+ years of experience (or equivalent combination of education and experience)
  • Demonstrated experience professionally developing technical teams and setting up team members to succeed
  • Ability to lead complex, multi-disciplinary projects from concept through deployment to manufacturing

Desired

  • Mastery of ASME Y14.5-2018
  • Experience with SolidWorks or equivalent CAD
  • Experience with Fanuc robots, Beckhoff PLCs, and Ignition
  • Experience with Kafka and MQTT
