Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Are you interested in joining a dynamic, fast-paced environment? Under the general direction of the Manager of Support Services and Supervisors of Support Services the Hospital Laboratory Tech III (HLT III) functions as a technical resource for the Main Operating Room, providing support to perioperative personnel which includes but not limited to surgeons, anesthesia providers, nursing staff. The HLT III is responsible for the inspection, preventive maintenance, performance verification, troubleshooting, repair coordination, and operational readiness of anesthesia machines, operating room equipment, and other clinical devices assigned to the Main Operating Room.

The HLT III manages equipment inventory, assists with capital equipment tracking, coordinates repairs and preventive maintenance with vendors and Biomedical Engineering, and helps ensure that all equipment is safe, functional, and available to support uninterrupted patient care. The HLT III also performs other duties associated with the Main Operating Room.

The HLT III performs duties with minimal supervision and completes assignments in accordance with established departmental policies and procedures. Work is periodically reviewed by the supervisor. Assignments are made by the direct supervisor, OR leadership, anesthesia leadership, and other designated management personnel.


Job Qualifications

  1. Demonstrated ability to work independently and complete assignments with minimal supervision.
  2. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with physicians, anesthesia providers, nursing staff, perioperative personnel, Biomedical Engineering, vendors, and coworkers.
  3. Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
  4. Skill in accurately completing documentation, logs, inventory records, and departmental forms.
  5. Knowledge of cleaning, sterilization, high-level disinfection, and handling procedures for reusable operating room and anesthesia equipment.
  6. Ability to safely clean, disinfect, and prepare equipment according to manufacturer recommendations and infection prevention standards.
  7. Working knowledge of medical center policies and procedures related to contaminated equipment, hazardous materials, and infection prevention.
  8. Physical ability to lift at least 30 pounds, push or pull equipment and carts, and safely transport and position clinical equipment throughout the operating room.
  9. Ability to remain mobile throughout the work shift as required.
  10. Ability to perform accurate equipment and supply inventories.
  11. Ability to maintain adequate inventory levels of equipment and supplies to support uninterrupted surgical services.
  12. Working knowledge of infection prevention and control policies applicable to perioperative services.
  13. Ability to read, write, and comprehend technical documentation and communicate effectively in English.
  14. Ability to troubleshoot, inspect, and perform basic maintenance on anesthesia machines and a wide variety of operating room equipment.
  15. Ability to communicate with vendors, Biomedical Engineering, and service representatives to troubleshoot equipment malfunctions and coordinate repairs.
  16. Ability to read, interpret, and follow equipment operation manuals, technical documentation, maintenance schedules, and troubleshooting procedures.
  17. Manual dexterity sufficient to assemble, disassemble, inspect, and repair small mechanical and electronic components.
  18. Demonstrated organizational skills and ability to prioritize work effectively in a fast-paced surgical environment.
  19. Ability to complete assigned responsibilities within established timeframes.
  20. Knowledge of the operation, function, testing, and maintenance requirements of anesthesia machines, operating room equipment, and related perioperative medical devices.
