Job Description
The School of Film/Video Equipment Assistant, under the supervision of the Equipment Supervisor, coordinates and organizes the daily operations of the Equipment Cage and its facilities used by students, faculty, and staff.
Qualifications
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Make reservations for checkout and check in of equipment requested by students, faculty, and staff.
- Coordinate the scheduling of equipment for use by faculty in classes.
- Check out equipment to students, faculty and staff providing technical information regarding use.
- Load and unload equipment going out and coming in.
- Upon equipment check in, inspect and report equipment needing repair and maintenance.
- Input client access as well as out of service equipment, late returns and fee information into the database.
- Provide information to the Equipment Supervisor regarding late returns of equipment, missing items, and repeat offenders of Cage policies and communicate with students and faculty regarding late or missing items.
- Update inventory in the database.
- Prepare the integration of equipment into the barcode and inventory systems.
- Assist with management of the database and barcode readers.
- Manage the Cage email account on a daily basis.
- Provide general maintenance and recommend equipment for repair.
- Troubleshoot equipment and/or user errors.
- Recommend and implement methods for improving operations of the Cage and its facilities.
- Recommend purchase of parts and equipment to the Equipment Supervisor.
- Manage student assistants as they assist in daily operations of Cage.
- Follow established policies and procedures.
- At the discretion of the Equipment Supervisor, attend factory sponsored workshops and maintain relationships with factory representatives to keep abreast of equipment developments.
- Provide information and support to School of Film/Video technical websites and other social media sites used to inform users about the Cage.
- Prepare technical literature regarding use of equipment as needed by students, faculty, and staff.
- Attend School of Film/Video faculty/staff meetings and weekly technical faculty/staff meetings.
- Other duties as assigned.
SKILLS/ABILITIES:
- Ability to work with students, faculty and staff within an art school environment.
- Multi-task and handle interruptions in a fast paced environment.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Detail oriented.
- Outstanding oral and written communication skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google and Adobe applications.
- Critical thinking skills required.
EDUCATION:
Undergraduate degree or equivalent professional experience in related fields.
EXPERIENCE:
- Experience with digital workflows and 16mm filmmaking.
- Experience with digital video cameras and16mm cameras, 16mm and 35mm flatbeds and film and video projectors.
- Experience with a wide range of lenses, lights, filters, grip, and camera accessories and support items.
- Experience with sound equipment including digital recorders, mixers, and microphones.
- Experience with Mac computers.
- Experience in a higher education setting.
FURTHER INFORMATION
The terms and working conditions of this position are subject to the collective bargaining agreement between CalArts and CWA, Local 9003. In the event of a conflict between this posting and the collective bargaining agreement, the collective bargaining agreement shall prevail.
