We currently have an exciting opportunity in our Enviornmental Health & Safety department. This position specifically is located in Norfolk, Virginia. We are looking for an Environmental Health & Safety Specialist.
Shift : 1st The hours are 07:00 - 16:00 with 1 hour lunch.

With minimal supervision, the Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) Specialist is responsible to provide EHS guidance, supervision and support to the workforce. Understand and teach EHS Federal, State and local regulations and NASSCO EHS policies and procedures, accident prevention principles, and their application to industrial operations. They must know how to conduct field inspections and investigations, and identify hazards and how to prevent them. They are responsible for conducting various EHS training classes. Develop, maintain and ensure continuous improvement of NASSCO’s Environmental, Health and Safety Management System (EHSMS) to ensure the EHSMS requirements are established, implemented and maintained in accordance with ISO14001 and OHSAS 18001 (ISO 45001) standards. This employee reports to the EHS Manager or Assistant EHS Manager. They will work closely with the EHS Team and Company personnel to schedule and conduct EHSMS audits and training and will develop EHS improvements for the Company. They must support and commit to the EHS Department’s and Company’s mission, vision, and values.

This candidate is accountable for the development and maintenance of the EHSMS to ensure continuous EHS improvement within the Company. Ensures that the Company’s compliance with ISO 140001 and OHSAS 18001 (ISO 45001) requirements. They will prepare the Company for internal and external audits of the EHSMS. Ensures the EHS Department responsibilities are in compliance with both standards. May act as the backup to the EHS Supervisor and is expected to work under minimal supervision in carrying out responsibilities. Individual will be expected to work independently, prioritizing work activities to meet agreed upon goals and objectives. Special EHS work assignments will be assigned.
Must be able to access all Company and government work locations and vessels as well as qualify for a Rapid Gate badge. While performing the duties of this position, the employee must be able to work at heights and in confined or restricted spaces aboard vessels under construction/repair. Inspections require climbing ladders, working at heights, walking on scaffolding, observing the use of tools and operations of equipment/machinery. Physical dexterity must allow for bending, reaching, climbing, crawling, and working on ladders and scaffolding. The candidate must physically able to walk to all yard locations and work in outside climates most of the time. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to focus. While performing the duties of the job, the employee is regularly required to sit, use hands and fingers, handle or feel objects or controls, and to talk and hear. The employee is occasionally exposed to dust, welding/burning fumes, smoke and moderate noise levels when performing inspections. The noise level is usually moderate to extremely noisy 75% of the time, which may include sirens, horns, chipping, and hammering. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally be exposed to vapors, gases, dust, welding/burning fumes, and smoke.
