Wieland is hiring an Environmental Technician The Environmental/Wastewater Technician will be responsible for

the daily operation, monitoring, and optimization of the Wieland East Alton industrial wastewater treatment facility (WWTF). This position plays a critical role in ensuring compliance with environmental permits, regulatory requirements, and company environmental standards. In addition to wastewater treatment operations, the Environmental Technician supports site-wide environmental compliance through sampling, inspections, recordkeeping, data management, and other environmental program activities.

The successful candidate will be a self-motivated individual with strong technical aptitude, attention to detail, and a commitment to environmental stewardship, operational excellence, and workplace safety.

This role is located in East Alton, IL and will be fully on-site.

Starting Pay: $62,000-$75,000

Schedule: Monday-Friday

Pay Schedule: Bi-Weekly

Responsibilities

Environmental Technician Responsibilities:

Wastewater Treatment Plant Operations

  • Operate and monitor the WWTF to ensure effective treatment and permit compliance.
  • Perform routine system inspections of treatment equipment, pumps, tanks, piping systems, instrumentation, and controls.
  • Monitor treatment processes and adjust chemical feed rates, pH control systems, sludge handling equipment, and other operational parameters as needed.
  • Collect and analyze operational data to optimize treatment performance and identify potential issues.
  • Respond to alarms, process upsets, and equipment malfunctions and implement corrective actions.
  • Coordinate repairs with maintenance personnel and contractors.
  • Manage treatment chemicals and related inventories.
  • Maintain accurate operating logs, reports, and records required by operating permits and company procedures.
  • Assist in the preparation of regulatory reports and compliance documentation.

Environmental Sampling and Monitoring

  • Collect wastewater, stormwater, and other environmental samples in accordance with regulatory requirements and company procedures.
  • Coordinate laboratory analysis and maintain sample chain-of-custody documentation.
  • Review analytical data and communicate unusual results or trends to management.

Environmental Compliance Support

  • Conduct routine environmental inspections of site operations, storage areas, treatment systems, and waste management areas.
  • Support compliance activities associated with air permits, wastewater permits, stormwater permits, hazardous waste regulations, spill prevention programs, and other environmental requirements.
  • Assist with environmental audits and regulatory inspections.
  • Maintain environmental records, databases, and compliance tracking systems.
  • Participate in corrective action efforts and assist with implementation of compliance improvements.
  • Support environmental training initiatives as required.
  • Support implementation of corrective and preventive actions following environmental events.

General Responsibilities

  • Promote and maintain compliance with all company safety policies and procedures.
  • Maintain good housekeeping standards in environmental operating areas.
  • Work effectively with operations, maintenance, laboratory personnel, contractors, and regulatory agencies.
  • Perform other environmental and operational duties as assigned.

Environmental Technician Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum of 2 years of industrial wastewater treatment, water treatment, environmental compliance, or related industrial experience.
  • Working knowledge of environmental regulations and industrial wastewater treatment processes.
  • Ability to perform field sampling and environmental inspections.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and assist with preparation of technical reports.
  • Ability to obtain Illinois Wastewater Operator Class K license withing three months of employment.

Environmental Technician Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Technology, Chemistry, Biology, Water Treatment, or a related technical field preferred.
  • Illinois Wastewater Operator Certification.
  • Experience operating industrial wastewater treatment systems in a manufacturing environment.
  • Experience with environmental permits, sampling programs, and regulatory compliance activities.
  • Familiarity with SCADA systems, PLC-controlled equipment, and process instrumentation.
  • Experience with hazardous waste management requirements.

Environmental Technician Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to work both indoors and outdoors in varied weather conditions.
  • Ability to walk long distances throughout an industrial facility.
  • Ability to climb stairs, ladders, and access elevated platforms.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Ability to work around treatment chemicals, moving equipment, and industrial processes safely.

Environmental Technician Work Environment:

  • Industrial manufacturing facility with exposure to noise, dust, heat, chemicals, and outdoor environmental conditions.
  • Occasional after-hours, weekends, or holiday work may be required to support plant operations, environmental monitoring, or emergency response activities.

Environmental Technician Key Performance Indicators:

  • Compliance with wastewater discharge permit limits.
  • Completion of required environmental sampling and inspections.
  • Timely and accurate regulatory reporting and recordkeeping.
  • Wastewater treatment plant operational reliability and uptime.
  • Successful completion of corrective actions identified during audits and inspections.
  • Safety performance and adherence to environmental compliance requirements.
