Our Calibration Department is currently seeking a passionate, enthusiastic Environmental Systems Calibration & Service Technician to be based at the Newport News, VA location. The Calibration Department specializes in precision calibration measuring equipment of various types.

Position Summary

The Environmental Systems Calibration & Service Technician is responsible for the inspection, calibration, preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and qualification support of environmental chambers, refrigerators, freezers, freeze dryers, incubators, and other controlled-temperature and environmental equipment utilized in pharmaceutical, life science, manufacturing, healthcare, and industrial facilities. This position will support customer sites throughout the Newport News and greater Tidewater region while ensuring all work is completed in accordance with ATS quality standards, ISO/IEC 17025 requirements, customer procedures, and applicable industry regulations.

The successful candidate will possess a strong understanding of temperature, humidity, pressure, and environmental control systems and be capable of performing both field and laboratory-based service activities.

Responsibilities

· Perform preventative maintenance, calibration, troubleshooting, and repair services on environmental chambers, refrigerators, freezers, freeze dryers, incubators, ovens, and related equipment.

· Conduct temperature mapping, qualification, and validation activities in accordance with customer protocols and industry standards.

· Calibrate and verify sensors, transmitters, controllers, data loggers, chart recorders, and environmental monitoring instrumentation.

· Diagnose electrical, mechanical, refrigeration, and control system issues using established troubleshooting methods and OEM documentation.

· Perform replacement of components including sensors, relays, contactors, heaters, humidification systems, compressors, fans, and control devices.

· Generate accurate calibration certificates, service reports, maintenance records, and qualification documentation.

· Ensure all measurement data, service activities, and repairs comply with ATS quality requirements and applicable accreditation standards.

· Review instrument histories and recommend repairs, upgrades, replacement equipment, and PM schedules.

· Manage assigned tools, calibration standards, service inventory, and company equipment.

· Coordinate service schedules and communicate effectively with customers regarding equipment status, findings, and recommendations.

· Support commissioning, installation, startup, and operational qualification projects as required.

· Follow all safety procedures and customer site requirements while maintaining a professional customer-focused demeanor.

· Assist with training and mentoring junior technicians when required.

· Support continuous improvement initiatives focused on quality, efficiency, and customer satisfaction.

QualificationsRequired Experience and Skills

· High School Diploma or equivalent required; Associate's Degree in Electronics, Instrumentation, HVAC/R, Mechanical Technology, or related field preferred.

· Minimum of 3 years of experience servicing, calibrating, maintaining, or repairing environmental chambers, refrigeration systems, freeze dryers, or controlled environment equipment.

· Working knowledge of temperature and humidity measurement principles.

· Experience interpreting electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and control drawings.

· Familiarity with PLC-based controllers, environmental chamber controls, and refrigeration systems.

· Strong understanding of calibration techniques for temperature, humidity, pressure, and related process variables.

· Experience working within ISO/IEC 17025, GMP, FDA-regulated, pharmaceutical, biotechnology, or laboratory environments preferred.

· Ability to troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and control system failures independently.

· Proficient with calibration documentation, work orders, and computerized maintenance systems.

· Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

· Strong problem-solving abilities and customer-service mindset.

· Ability to manage multiple projects and customer commitments simultaneously.

Preferred Qualifications

· EPA Section 608 Universal Certification.

· Technical training in HVAC/R, instrumentation, electronics, or industrial maintenance.

· Experience with pharmaceutical stability chambers and GMP-qualified equipment.

· Experience performing temperature mapping and environmental qualification studies.

· Familiarity with manufacturers such as Thermotron, Weiss Technik, Binder, Blue M, Tenney, Espec, Caron, Panasonic, Forma Scientific, Revco, Steris, and Virtis.

Additional Requirements

· Ability and willingness to work 40 hours per week and overtime as required to meet customer schedules.

· Ability and willingness to travel throughout Virginia, North Carolina, Maryland, and surrounding regions up to 50%.

· Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.

· Ability to pass background screening and drug testing requirements.

Physical Requirements

· Ability to lift and carry up to 55 pounds.

· Ability to maneuver equipment and tools in laboratory, manufacturing, and industrial environments.

· Frequent bending, kneeling, stooping, reaching, climbing ladders, and working in mechanical spaces.

· Ability to work in varying temperature environments, including refrigerated and freezer areas.
