Job Title: Environmental Specialist, Water

Reporting to the Environmental Manager, the Environmental Specialist, Water is responsible for leading water-related environmental monitoring programs that support mine construction and operations while ensuring compliance with environmental permits, regulatory requirements, and company standards. This role provides technical expertise in surface water, groundwater, hydrology, and water quality, supports water management initiatives, coordinates consultants and contractors, and contributes to continuous improvement of environmental programs.

Responsibilities (including but not limited to):

Water Monitoring & Technical Support

  • Lead surface water, groundwater, and environmental monitoring programs.
  • Conduct environmental sampling, field investigations, and data analysis.
  • Interpret water quality, groundwater, and hydrological data to support operational and regulatory decision-making.
  • Evaluate monitoring results against permit requirements, water quality objectives, and regulatory standards.
  • Support aquatic effects monitoring and environmental studies.

Water Management & Compliance

  • Support water management programs and water treatment operations.
  • Coordinate surface water, groundwater, and receiving environment monitoring programs.
  • Prepare technical reports and regulatory submissions.
  • Participate in environmental inspections, audits, and compliance activities.
  • Support discharge authorizations and environmental permitting requirements.

Program Coordination & Continuous Improvement

  • Coordinate environmental consultants, contractors, laboratories, and technical studies.
  • Develop and improve environmental monitoring programs, procedures, and standard operating procedures.
  • Support groundwater monitoring well installation, maintenance, monitoring, and decommissioning.
  • Maintain accurate environmental data and ensure quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC).

Leadership & Collaboration

  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to Environmental Technicians and field personnel.
  • Collaborate with Operations, Engineering, Construction, and Indigenous partners to achieve environmental objectives.
  • Promote a culture of safety, environmental stewardship, and continuous improvement.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

The Ideal Candidate

Education / Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Hydrogeology, Hydrology, Geoscience, Earth Sciences, Biology, Environmental Studies, or a related discipline.
  • Eligibility for registration as a Professional Agrologist (P.Ag.), Professional Geoscientist (P.Geo.), Registered Professional Biologist (RPBio), Professional Engineer (P.Eng.), or other applicable professional designation is considered an asset.
  • Valid Class 5 Driver's Licence with a clean driving record.
  • Occupational First Aid, Wilderness First Aid, WHMIS, and TDG certifications, or willingness to obtain.
  • Ability to work a rotational schedule in a remote camp environment.

Experience / Skills

  • 5+ years of progressive environmental experience in mining, construction, or other industrial environments.
  • Experience leading surface water, groundwater, and environmental monitoring programs.
  • Experience supporting water management, water treatment, environmental compliance, and regulatory reporting.
  • Experience interpreting hydrological, hydrogeological, and water quality data.
  • Experience coordinating consultants, contractors, and technical studies.
  • Working knowledge of applicable provincial and federal environmental legislation and permitting requirements.
  • Strong technical, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent organizational, written, and verbal communication skills with strong attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently while collaborating effectively within multidisciplinary teams.
  • Strong leadership, mentoring, and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office and environmental data management systems.
  • Experience working at a remote mine site is considered an asset.

Work Location & Conditions

This is a site-based camp job at Eskay Creek Mine site. This position involves working at a remote mine site on a 15 days on/13 days off rotation.     

The Eskay Creek Revitalization Project is located within the Coast Mountains of Northwestern British Columbia and Tahltan Territory. Ground transportation will be provided from local communities to the Eskay Creek Site facilities. For those applicants located elsewhere in western Canada, flight transportation from major urban centers will be provided to the Terrace or Smithers airports, from which shuttles will provide transportation to the Eskay Creek Camp facilities. Travel time and expenses are subject to Skeena’s Travel Policy.    

There will be exposure to extreme temperatures in all seasons including working outdoors in snow, mud, ice, and water conditions, walking to and from different locations on uneven ground, prolonged periods of standing and physically handling/lifting/moving heavy objects.      

Compensation
The expected hourly range for this position is CAD 45-60, in line with the competitive job market for such roles carried out in British Columbia. Salary ranges are guidelines and any job offer received by a candidate will be determined on a number of factors such as relevant education, training, and/or experience.
