Job Title: Environmental Specialist

Reporting directly to the Environmental Manager, the Environmental Specialist supports the implementation of sustainability requirements at the Eskay Creek Mine site. This site-based role works across operations departments and is responsible for proactively supporting site operations in accordance with legislative requirements, permits, and company commitments.

The Environmental Specialist will support compliance requirements, implement the site Environmental Management System (EMS), and contribute to site environmental initiatives. The role also works closely with the Skeena Sustainability team to support the Eskay Creek Revitalization Project, including implementation of agreements and strengthening relationships with the Tahltan Central Government.

Responsibilities (including but not limited to)

Environmental Management System (EMS)

  • Coordinate implementation and maintenance of the site EMS to proactively manage environmental compliance, risk, and performance.
  • Oversee consultants and coordinate Qualified Professionals (QPs) to complete EMS requirements.

Operational Collaboration & Compliance

  • Collaborate proactively with Operations to ensure activities align with legislation, permits, schedules, and budgets.
  • Coordinate compliance reporting, including analysis, interpretation, and communication of environmental data to support decision-making.

Team Leadership & Development

  • Support team development through scheduling, budgeting, and resource planning.
  • Provide technical guidance, coaching, and mentoring to site personnel.

Reclamation, Closure & Emergency Planning

  • Support implementation of reclamation and closure planning initiatives.
  • Participate in environmental emergency preparedness and response planning.

Stakeholder Engagement & Sustainability

  • Build and maintain relationships required to support sustainability commitments and Tahltan governance initiatives.
  • Support ESG tracking, reporting, and sustainability initiatives.

Data & Records Management

  • Oversee environmental data and records management in accordance with regulatory and company requirements.

Performance & Accountability

  • Maintain accountability with internal and external stakeholders on key deliverables.
  • Contribute to a performance-driven culture.

Other Duties

  • Perform additional related duties as required.

The Ideal Candidate

Education / Qualifications:

  • Minimum 6 years of experience in operational/site environmental management, preferably within mining.
  • Experience with water quality, ML/ARD, construction environmental management, and contractor management.
  • Demonstrated success implementing Environmental Management Systems across multidisciplinary teams.
  • Experience in an environmental leadership role with a project owner/operator.
  • Bachelor’s degree or diploma in environmental studies, regulatory approvals, or a related discipline.
  • Strong understanding of BC and federal environmental regulatory processes related to mining development.
  • Experience working with Indigenous governments and communities, including understanding governance, protocols, and values.
  • Registered or eligible to register as a Qualified Professional (e.g., P.Ag, R.P.Bio, P.Eng) preferred.

Work Location & Conditions

This is a site-based camp job at Eskay Creek Mine site. This position involves working at a remote mine site on a 15 days on/13 days off rotation.     

The Eskay Creek Revitalization Project is located within the Coast Mountains of Northwestern British Columbia and Tahltan Territory. Ground transportation will be provided from local communities to the Eskay Creek Site facilities. For those applicants located elsewhere in western Canada, flight transportation from major urban centers will be provided to the Terrace or Smithers airports, from which shuttles will provide transportation to the Eskay Creek Camp facilities. Travel time and expenses are subject to Skeena’s Travel Policy.    

There will be exposure to extreme temperatures in all seasons including working outdoors in snow, mud, ice, and water conditions, walking to and from different locations on uneven ground, prolonged periods of standing and physically handling/lifting/moving heavy objects.      

Compensation

The expected salary range for this position is CAD $95,000-$115,000, in line with the competitive job market for such roles carried out in British Columbia. Salary ranges are guidelines and any job offer received by a candidate will be determined on a number of factors such as relevant education, training, and/or experience.
