Job Description

Position Summary

ChristianaCare is seeking a dedicated Environmental Services Associate III to help maintain a clean, safe, and sanitary environment for patients, visitors, and staff. This position plays a vital role in supporting infection prevention efforts and ensuring a positive healthcare experience through outstanding environmental services and customer service.

Key Responsibilities

Environmental Cleaning & Sanitation

  • Clean and maintain patient rooms, offices, public spaces, and ancillary areas to established cleanliness standards.
  • Clean and disinfect isolation and precaution rooms according to infection control policies and procedures.
  • Maintain Environmental Services closets, carts, and equipment in a clean, organized, and safe condition.
  • Ensure carts and equipment are never left unattended and remove empty boxes from carts, closets, and work areas.
  • Restock paper products, soap, and other supplies throughout the facility.
  • Pick up and dispose of trash, bulk waste, infectious waste, and soiled linen according to established procedures.
  • Remove needle boxes, glove boxes, and soiled equipment from patient rooms and transport them to designated utility areas.
  • Assist with floor care activities, including cleaning, stripping, refinishing floors, shampooing carpets, and upholstery cleaning as assigned.

Safety & Compliance

  • Follow all departmental safety policies, infection prevention procedures, and regulatory requirements.
  • Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety glasses at all times.
  • Report maintenance issues, damages, hazards, and unsafe conditions promptly to supervisors.
  • Handle infectious waste and hazardous materials safely and appropriately.

Communication & Teamwork

  • Respond promptly to Environmental Services calls, texts, and work requests when assigned.
  • Maintain work-issued phones and log into required applications at the beginning of each shift.
  • Participate in departmental meetings, training sessions, and in-service education programs.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, compassion, and a service-oriented attitude when interacting with patients, visitors, and colleagues.
  • Support departmental operations through additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • One year of housekeeping, environmental services, or custodial experience preferred.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively.
  • Strong understanding of customer service principles and teamwork.
  • Ability to follow departmental policies, procedures, and safety standards.
  • Ability to maintain a high level of personal hygiene and professionalism.
  • Ability to maintain patient confidentiality and privacy.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to cleanliness and infection prevention.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods throughout the shift.
  • Ability to perform frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing, pulling, and carrying.
  • Ability to safely handle cleaning equipment, supplies, and waste materials.

Work Environment

  • Healthcare setting with daily interaction with patients, visitors, and healthcare staff.
  • Exposure to cleaning chemicals, disinfectants, hazardous materials, and infectious waste.
  • Potential exposure to infectious diseases when proper precautions are not followed.
  • Requires strict adherence to safety and infection prevention protocols.

Additional Responsibilities

Depending on operational needs, Environmental Services Associates may be assigned to:

  • One-on-one employee training
  • Bed board coverage and weekend rotations
  • Password resets on work-issued devices
  • Furniture and equipment transport
  • Floor stripping and refinishing projects
  • Carpet, upholstery, wall, and window cleaning

This position has a starting rate of $18.23 per hour, regardless of prior experience. After six months of continuous employment, the hourly rate will automatically increase to $21.32 per hour. After one year of continuous employment, the hourly rate will automatically increase to $22.34 per hour.

This pay rate/range represents ChristianaCare’s good faith and reasonable estimate of compensation at the time of posting. The actual salary within this range offered to a successful candidate will depend on individual factors including without limitation skills, relevant experience, and qualifications as they relate to specific job requirements.
