By joining the Division of Water, Watershed Management Branch, Water Supply Section as an Environmental
Scientist I in Franklin County, you will have the opportunity to work in a professional level position that
allows the incumbent to work with the public, government agencies, and the regulated community to ensure
compliance with state and federal environmental laws and regulations helping to protect Kentucky's water
resources.

Holders of the Environmental Scientist I position will complete tasks such as:
  • Serve as Licensed FAA Part 107 Remote pilot responsible for flying missions for DOW. Plan and executes drone
    missions including airspace determinations, weather conditions, and crew management.
  • Develop aerial imagery using small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (sUAS) on a statewide basis and develop
    georeferenced images for computer models for projects.
  • Prepare reports and technical documents.
  • Research equipment and techniques for acquiring necessary data to develop maps and other GIS-related
    products for the Division of Water and other EEC programs.

Desired candidates possess the following requisite skills or experience applicable to the position:
  • Hold and maintain a FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot license.
  • Knowledge in using ArcGIS Pro, Sitescan, and other geographic and imagery software.
  • Planning and organizational skills.
  • Technical writing skills.
  • Communicating with different audiences.

Additional position information:
  • Must maintain a driver's license
  • Frequent communication in person or by other means
  • Some travel required
  • Field work may require standing, stooping, bending, lifting and walking on uneven terrain at times.

Minimum Requirements
EDUCATION:
Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor's degree in a natural, biological or physical science OR Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor's degree including or supplemented by 20 semester hours in a natural, biological or physical science.

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS:

Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE:
NONE

Substitute EXPERIENCE for EDUCATION:
Experience in natural resources, environmental control, engineering or a related area will substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

Working Conditions

Work is typically performed in an office setting. Incumbents in this class may perform work in the field with frequent travel on a statewide basis. An incumbent in this position may be subject to adverse weather conditions, exposure to snakes and insects, water-borne pathogens, broken glass, rusty metal in streams, and hazards common to operation of electro-fishing equipment, which require the following of safety procedures.

Probationary Period

This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
