Your Opportunity

Stantec is looking for a driven Environmental Scientist to lead impactful work across the Gulf region. Join a team providing permitting strategy, environmental assessment and application preparation, and technical support for projects that require municipal, provincial/state, and federal environmental approvals and licenses.

We help our clients identify constraints and respond to opportunities within the changing regulatory and corporate environment through active engagement with the public, stakeholder groups, and government regulators. Our team members are involved in a variety of projects that may include Waters of the U.S. (WOTUS) delineations and Clean Water Act permitting, threatened and endangered species habitat assessments and species presence/absence surveys, National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), siting and routing studies, stream assessments and sampling, habitat restoration, siting and zoning applications, and complex planning and permitting for a variety of industries including oil and gas renewable energy, transportation, power, government, and development.

This position can be located in or near any Stantec Texas office. Flexibility to travel as needed for project and fieldwork (up to 75%), potentially requiring extended stays in the field.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Support projects and key client relationships— natural gas pipelines, Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) facilities, solar facilities, and other energy-related projects; residential and commercial development; mitigation/conservation banking, water resources infrastructure; and transportation.
  • Lead teams that collect and report on tasks that include, wetland delineations, threatened and endangered species habitat characterizations, land use mapping and vegetation cover classification, and other natural resource-focused surveys. Coordinate agency communications, oversee technical assessments, and guide project teams through successful execution.
  • Assist with preparing work plans, assembling project teams, delegating tasks and ensuring compliance with scope and timely completion of tasks.
  • Establishes and maintains quality assurance plans and safety plans for assigned projects.
  • Provide mentorship to early career staff, with potential opportunities for direct supervision.

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • Thorough understanding of technical environmental impact analysis methods and sound knowledge of NEPA requirements and related environmental regulations (Section 401, 402, and 404 of the Clean Water Act).
  • Solid knowledge of environmental compliance requirements as they relate to public and private infrastructure (transportation, renewable energy, and oil/gas/energy) projects.
  • Working knowledge of agencies including Bureau of Indian Affairs, Bureau of Land Management, United States (US) Army Corps of Engineers, US Fish and Wildlife Service, State Department of Natural Resources/Department of Environmental Protection/Department of Environmental Quality/Department of Transportation, FERC, Federal Highway Administration, Federal Aviation Administration.
  • Demonstrated skill and commitment to QA/QC practices.
  • Demonstrated experience or willingness to manage multiple projects and ability to motivate self and others to overcome obstacles and achieve goals.
  • Demonstrated ability in collaborative problem-solving with stakeholders, clients, and teammates.
  • Demonstrated leadership in striving to continuously improve technical performance.
  • Flexibility to travel as needed for project and fieldwork (up to 75%), potentially requiring extended stays in the field.
  • Where lawful, may require post-employment drug testing based on client needs and requirements.
  • A good driving record and valid state driver's license.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s or advanced degree in environmental science, rangeland science, biological resources or a closely related field.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years’ experience leading delineations, preferably in the Gulf Region (TX, OK, LA, MS, AR).
  • Local, state, and Federal compliance and environmental permitting experience is a plus.
  • Professional Wetland Scientist (PWS) or other applicable professional environmental certification is a plus.

Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time. Field work includes working on uneven terrain and difficult environments, and may include extended exposure to inclement weather such as high heat, cold, and rain.
