Job Description

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and perform surface water and groundwater sampling programs in streams, springs, wells, and coastal environments across Hawaiʻi.
  • Collect and process environmental samples including surface water, groundwater, and stormwater as well as supporting media such as soil and sediment.
  • Operate, calibrate, and maintain field instrumentation including flow meters, automated samplers, turbidity meters, and multi-parameter sondes (e.g., YSI).
  • Install and maintain monitoring stations for hydrologic, hydraulic, and water quality data collection in natural and engineered systems.
  • Support analysis and interpretation laboratory data for nutrients, bacteria, metals, organics, petroleum hydrocarbons, and conventional water quality parameters
  • Perform QA/QC reviews and statistical analyses to ensure data quality objectives are met and defensible.
  • Provide technical guidance to project teams and clients on water quality standards, monitoring requirements, and regulatory frameworks in Hawaiʻi
  • Communicate technical findings clearly through reports, presentations, and client coordination.
  • Manage and interpret groundwater and surface water flow data, including development of rating curves, runoff estimates, and storm event characterization.
  • Support and prepare technical reports, monitoring plans, and regulatory documentation
  • Conduct compliance inspections and audits for industrial and municipal facilities, ensuring adherence to permit conditions and best management practices (BMPs).

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Chemistry, Hydrology, Water Resources, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in water quality, with a strong emphasis on surface water and groundwater sampling and analysis.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Hawaiʻi-specific environmental conditions, including watershed processes, groundwater systems, and coastal influences.
  • Experience with field sampling protocols, instrumentation, and laboratory data validation.
  • Excellent analytical, technical writing, and communication skills, with the ability to convey complex concepts to diverse audiences.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access) and data management tools.
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
  • Ability to conduct fieldwork under varying environmental and weather conditions, including storm events and remote locations.
  • Willingness to work occasional evenings, weekends, or extended hours as required by field conditions.
  • Must reside within the state of Hawaiʻi. Relocation package not offered.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with hydrologic data modeling, telemetry systems, and environmental data management.
  • Strong understanding of federal and State of Hawaiʻi regulations, including NPDES and Underground Injection Control (UIC) programs.
  • Experience with environmental permits and plans, including NPDES, UIC, and stormwater management plans (SWPPPs/SWMPs).
  • Familiarity with risk communication principles.
  • 40-hour HAZWOPER certification (29 CFR §1910.120(e)).
  • AAUS Scientific Diving Certification – Current certification under American Academy of Underwater Sciences standards, with demonstrated experience conducting scientific diving operations to support surface water and groundwater investigations, including underwater sample collection, instrument deployment, and inspection of submerged infrastructure in accordance with approved dive safety plans and OSHA requirements.
