Job Description

We require an Environmental Planner at an intermediate to senior level to complement our well established team and help ensure we achieve our ambitions, including exceeding relevant environmental requirements.

We can’t emphasise enough that this is not a typical client-side planning role. Auckland Airport is nationally significant infrastructure with more than 800 businesses operating across a site measuring approximately 1,500 hectares. It really is a big back yard!

Our programme of work is similarly extensive and presents opportunities to be involved in a wide variety of projects across the precinct. This includes work you might not necessarily associate with the airport, including archaeology, ecology, coastal processes, water quality, noise, and natural hazards. Many of our projects are interlinked and you will play a key part in helping us ensure our projects are delivered with this bigger picture in mind.

Your work will not stop with obtaining resource consents or shaping policy, you will also help with implementation and monitoring to see your hard work come to fruition.

You will be part of an experienced team of environmental planners, work closely with a wider Airport team as well as a range of external consultants, and learn a lot along the way.

To fulfil the requirements of the role you will demonstrate a good understanding of the planning framework relevant to Auckland Airport and have a track record of contributing to delivering positive environmental outcomes in the public or private sector.

Your key responsibilities will be:

  • Preparing preliminary planning assessments for potential development at Auckland Airport;
  • Shaping planned development to improve environmental outcomes;
  • Preparing resource consent applications, outline plans and waivers, including internal and external engagement;
  • Supporting the implementation of resource consents and promoting environmental best practice across the precinct, including compliance reporting and engagement with key stakeholders and partners;
  • Leading the implementation of Auckland Airport’s Noise Reduction Programme;
  • Responding to third-party proposals that may adversely affect Auckland Airport, particularly reverse sensitivity effects.
  • Driving process improvements within the planning team.

What you’ll bring to the role:

  • A tertiary qualification in Resource Management Planning or similar.
  • 2-6 years environmental planning experience, including consenting work in New Zealand with corresponding understanding of the relevant planning framework.
  • Sound business writing and verbal communication skills including well-developed presentation skills; and ability to consistently deliver in a high volume / change environment.
  • An ability to work independently while knowing when to check in.
  • An ability to cope with business complexity.
  • Attention to detail and a proven ability to influence and negotiate planning outcomes.
