Our Branch

The Group Strategy and Performance Branch provides strategic support and specialist services that enable Infrastructure Services to deliver high-quality outcomes across Brisbane. The HSEQ team plays a critical role in supporting environmental compliance, sustainability initiatives and continuous improvement, ensuring Council's operations align with legislative requirements and industry best practice.

The Role

We are seeking an experienced Environmental Management Officer to provide professional environmental advice, support and leadership across Infrastructure Services.

Reporting to the HSEQ Delivery Lead, you will actively contribute to the ongoing management and improvement of the Infrastructure Services Environmental Management System and support compliance with ISO 14001 accreditation requirements. You will undertake environmental inspections and audits, provide specialist advice to operational teams, investigate environmental incidents and develop practical strategies to improve environmental performance.

You will work closely with managers, team leaders, contractors and project teams to ensure environmental risks are effectively managed and environmental responsibilities are understood and met. The role will also involve developing environmental management plans, supporting sustainability initiatives, preparing reports and delivering environmental training and awareness programs.

This is a varied role that combines office-based and field-based activities and offers the opportunity to influence environmental performance across a broad and diverse operational environment.

What Are We Looking For?

To be successful in this role, you will demonstrate:

• experience administering Environmental Management Systems (EMS), including implementation, auditing and continuous improvement activities
• strong knowledge of environmental legislation, standards and compliance requirements within an operational environment
• experience conducting environmental inspections, audits and risk assessments
• experience developing and implementing environmental management plans and project-specific environmental controls
• the ability to investigate environmental incidents, identify root causes and recommend practical corrective actions
• experience developing and delivering environmental inductions, training and awareness programs
• strong written communication skills, including the preparation of reports, briefing notes and technical documentation
• highly developed interpersonal skills with the ability to influence, coach and build effective relationships with operational teams and stakeholders
• strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to identify trends and support continuous improvement initiatives

Mandatory Requirements

• A current C Class Driver Licence.

Highly Regarded

• Tertiary qualifications in Environmental Management, Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Planning, Chemistry or a related discipline.
• White Card (Construction Industry Induction).
• Knowledge of ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems.
• Experience in civil construction, infrastructure, maintenance or other operational industries.
• Knowledge of current and emerging environmental and sustainability practices.
