The Environmental Lead supports day-to-day environmental operations while taking on additional responsibilities to assist with the implementation of environmental programs, the management of the site sampling programs (including direct assistance with the 3rd party sampling program and leading the SWTS sampling program), the completion of internal audits, and environmental initiatives at assigned facilities. Working closely with site leadership and the Corporate EH&S Team, the Environmental Lead is responsible for identifying compliance gaps, developing recommendations, and establishing corrective action plans, while supporting and influencing site teams to ensure timely execution.
Responsibilities:
Site Oversight & Inspections
• Conducts daily yard and plant environmental condition inspections.
• Performs spot checks to ensure compliance with environmental permits, approvals, and applicable regulatory requirements.
• Monitors containment areas, spill prevention systems, and environmental signage to ensure compliance with standards.
• Maintains a visible presence in the facility as a key point of contact for environmental matters.
• Conducts environmental audits, walkthroughs and employee interviews
• Reviews applicable TRD requirements and the site compliance to these requirements
Program & Document Management
• Reviews, trains staff on, and maintains Job Hazard Assessments (JHAs), Safe Operating Procedures (SOPs), and Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) programs that pertain to Environmental systems and equipment.
• Acts as a resource to Plant Management in translating Environmental policies into actionable site programs
• Tracks, maintains and reports on ECA compliance reporting requirements
• Reviews all 3rd party generated site environmental reports for areas of concern and develops appropriate corrective actions to address all relevant items
• Enters all relevant Environmental incidents and reportables into the ARMOR system
Staff & Contractor Engagement
• Assists with the review, onboarding and oversight of Environmental related contractors
• Supports the management of on site environmental projects and ensures compliance to site rules / regulations during on site work.
Emergency & Incident Response
• Plans, coordinates, and documents emergency drills.
• Investigates Environmental incidents and near misses; documents findings including observations and corrective actions.
Regulatory Compliance & Continuous Improvement
• Monitors changes to provincial Environmental legislation and ensures site compliance.
• Carries out other duties in support of operational goals, as assigned
Qualifications
• Post-secondary education in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Natural Resources, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
• Professional designation such as P.Eng., P.Geol., or P.Chem. is considered an asset.
• Additional certifications such as First Aid/CPR, WHMIS, Confined Space, or Train-the-Trainer are considered an asset.
• Valid driver’s license required.
• Minimum 7 to 10 years of environmental experience in a manufacturing or industrial environment, including direct experience with environmental sampling programs.
• Proficiency in English both spoken and written, French considered a strong asset.
• Strong knowledge of environmental legislation at both the provincial and federal levels.
• Demonstrated ability to identify environmental hazards, assess risk, and implement effective controls.
• Experience managing environmental sampling programs, including soil, groundwater, surface water, stormwater, and air quality .
• Ability to review and interpret environmental analytical data against regulatory standards and permit conditions.
• Experience developing compliance recommendations and corrective action plans based on sampling results.
• Knowledge of emergency preparedness, spill response coordination, and regulatory notification requirements.
• Ability to develop, implement, and maintain environmental programs and management systems.
• Strong understanding of plant, yard, and industrial operations as they relate to environmental compliance.
• Ability to integrate environmental initiatives into daily operational practices.
• Familiarity with waste management, stormwater management, and air emissions regulatory requirements.
• Strong facilitation, coaching, and conflict resolution skills.
• High attention to detail and data accuracy.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
• Familiarity with environmental management software or sampling databases is an asset.
