Role Responsibilities

The Environmental Lands Policy Analyst provides senior policy leadership in the development, coordination, and implementation of policies, tools, strategies, and legislation that support Alberta's long-term environmental outcomes. Working within the Environmental Lands Policy and Programs team, this position leads complex policy initiatives related to environmental land management, biodiversity conservation, cumulative effects management, and land stewardship.

Key responsibilities include:

• Leading the development and amendment of policies, guidelines, and legislation related to environmental land management.
• Conducting research and analysis to develop policy options, briefing notes, Cabinet packages, legislative proposals, reports, and presentations.
• Supporting stakeholder, Indigenous, intergovernmental, and cross-ministry engagement to advance policy objectives and implementation.
• Providing strategic advice on legislation, regulations, and policy alignment across environmental and public lands frameworks.
• Building collaborative relationships with government partners, Indigenous communities, industry, conservation organizations, and research institutions.
• Representing the department on provincial and intergovernmental committees, working groups, and policy initiatives.
• Delivering training, presentations, and communication materials to support understanding and implementation of new or updated policies.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirement:

University graduation in a related field such as Environmental Studies, Natural Resource Management, Ecology, Environmental Economics, Public Administration, Public Policy plus 4 years progressively responsible related experience; or equivalent as described below.

Equivalency: Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of: 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or 1 year of experience for 1 year of education

The Successful Candidate must also have:

• Experience in policy processes and practices including experience interpreting legislation, regulations and policy frameworks.
• Experience in project management and coordination of complex policy initiatives in a collaborative team environment.
• Experience in preparing action requests and briefing materials.

Assets:

• Knowledge of Alberta legislation and policy frameworks, including the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act (EPEA), Alberta Land Stewardship Act (ALSA), Public Lands Act (PLA), and Water Act
• Knowledge and experience related to the integration of nature and the economy, such as ecosystem accounting, nature-related financial risks and disclosures, ecosystem service valuation, biodiversity credits and market-based instruments, incentives and conservation finance.
• Experience working with Indigenous communities, municipalities, industry, or conservation organizations.
• Understanding of biodiversity conservation, cumulative effects management, environmental policy, and land-use planning.
• Strong written communication, presentation, facilitation, and relationship-building skills.

Notes

This position is a permanent, full-time role, with the standard weekly work hours of 36.25, Monday to Friday.

Travel within the area and throughout the province will be required as part of your responsibilities to coordinate with Ministry staff and colleagues, other government departments, clients, and other external stakeholders.
