The Position

We currently have an opening for an Environmental Lab Technician. This role reports directly to the Environmental Manager. The Environmental Lab Technician will provide industry-specific knowledge and technical support to an integrated pulp and paper mill with multi-media responsibilities.

The Environmental Technician will be responsible for preparing daily environmental reports and provide technical support to the environmental department. Familiar with mill environmental permit limits and compliance calculation methods. Understands pulp and paper processes and how it affects environmental performance – NCG system, wastewater loading and treatment, boiler operations and pollution control equipment. Troubleshoots mill environmental performance issues. Provides process support through special projects, testing, and statistical analysis of data. Research and implement new laboratory test methods.

This position involves communication with facility management and regulatory agencies such as the EPA, Ecology, and Jefferson County. Topics include compliance issues, audits, inspections, and compliance reports.



Qualifications

Job Responsibilities

  • Air Rotation
    • Generating data for daily, monthly and annual reporting. Investigation and follow up documentation of air emissions exceedances using Excel, Parcview and Logviewer. Calculate and crosscheck calculations. Write and update laboratory SOPs. Prepare compliance report data. Conduct Environmental troubleshooting.
    • Equipment calibration and maintenance. Includes ordering replacement parts and supplies using 4site.
    • Fuel and Operations testing, including but not limited to: (Landfill Waste (daily and quarterly sampling events), Heavy Black Liquor SolidsBL, Recovery), Lime Availability Testing, Liquor TSS.
    • Monthly inspections including but not limited to: SPCC and NCG/Condensate. Yearly NCG/Condensate inspections using TVA meter. Assistance on quarterly ASB condensate sampling.
    • Ongoing training and professional development to ensure that environmental calculations and reporting methods used meet existing and emerging regulations. Cross training within department, method 9 smoke school certification, and active participation in the mill safety program and clean up initiatives.
    • Stack emission reading (Method 9) on an as needed basis. Assisting Engineer with preparing monthly and quarterly air reports as needed. Active participation in mill safety program.
    • Other duties and special projects as assigned.
  • Water Rotation
    • Sample collection, testing, and data analysis to meet permit requirements, including daily TSS and weekly BOD. Prepare data for monthly and annual reporting. Investigation and follow up documentation of water emissions exceedances using Excel, Parcview and Logviewer. Calculate and crosscheck calculations. Prepare compliance report data.
    • Equipment, maintenance and calibration. Includes ordering replacement parts and supplies using 4site and receiving receipts for Spectra invoices.
    • Maintain quality assurance records for wastewater analysis. Conduct quality assurance studies (NCASI, DMRQA) for maintaining WA state laboratory accreditation. Update and write laboratory SOPs as needed.
    • Weekly ASB equipment rounds, nutrient testing, and management/inventory of Byogon feed system to the ASB. Qquarterly ASB/condensate sampling, semi-annual sludge level measurements. Monthly SPCC inspections.
    • Ongoing training and professional development to ensure that environmental calculations and reporting methods used meet existing and emerging regulations. Cross training within department, method 9 smoke school certification, and active participation in the mill safety program and clean up initiatives.
    • Assisting Engineer with preparing monthly and quarterly water reports as needed.
    • Other duties and special projects as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to meet deadlines and work without supervision.

Required Experience

  • Experience in the environmental compliance field, laboratory field, or pulp and paper setting



Required Education

  • High school degree with strong quantitative skills.

  • Full-time, Non-Exempt position
  • Salary range: $50,000-$70,000
