Location and Working Environment
- This position is 100% onsite in Tralee, Ireland.
Purpose & Scope
- The Environmental Specialist is responsible for ensuring that the Environmental Management function at Astellas Ireland Co. Ltd, Tralee Plant is maintained on an ongoing basis in conformance with ISO 14001, corporate requirements, client requirements and applicable environmental legislation.
- The role supports environmental compliance, monitoring, reporting, waste management, wastewater treatment plant operation, environmental awareness and continuous improvement across the site.
- The position requires practical, solution-focused environmental expertise, strong communication skills and the ability to manage priorities across operational, compliance and community-facing activities.
Role and Responsibilities
- Environmental Management: Ensure compliance with site procedures, policies, environmental requirements, ISO 14001 and corporate standards; implement S+EMS objectives and identify improvement opportunities.
- Audits & Procedures: Conduct SOP audits, maintain/update procedures, complete monthly environmental audits, and investigate and document nonconformities and corrective actions.
- Compliance & Monitoring: Operate the WWTP and Waste Management System in line with licences and regulations, including testing, reporting, waste records, collections and rebates.
- Environmental Performance: Maintain environmental and safety monitoring programmes, oversee sampling and results, and compile/report KPIs and corporate audit data.
- Projects & Awareness: Support biodiversity and nature reserve activities, promote environmental awareness, and deliver presentations and training to site teams, contractors, students and external groups.
- Reporting & Escalation: Provide regular environmental compliance, KPI, audit and improvement updates to the Facilities Lead and site forums, escalating environmental, compliance, resource and operational issues promptly.
Required Qualifications
- Degree in Environmental Science, Engineering or a related discipline, with extensive relevant experience, ideally in an industrial or pharmaceutical manufacturing environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Environmental Expertise: Strong knowledge of environmental legislation, industry guidance and codes of practice, with experience supporting ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems and knowledge of waste, recycling, wastewater, monitoring and reporting.
- Communication & Administration: Excellent written, presentation and interpersonal skills; fully proficient in Microsoft Office with strong attention to detail and effective documentation practices.
- Project & Team Skills: Able to manage multiple projects, prioritise workloads and work collaboratively, with a practical, client-focused, solution-oriented approach and commitment to continuous learning.
