Job Description

In Australia, we operate five steelmaking coal mines in Queensland’s Bowen Basin, and have additional joint venture interests in manganese, as well as copper exploration projects under way in North West Queensland. Steelmaking coal is an essential ingredient in blast-furnace steel manufacture, producing steel used for critical building and infrastructure around the world.

We are seeking an Environmental Coordinator to join the team at Aquila Mine on a full-time, permanent basis with Anglo American. The Environmental Coordinator supports all aspects of the environment function at Aquila Mine. Working in close collaboration with the broader Environmental team and site Operations, this role contributes to driving environmental performance, ensuring compliance with Anglo American standards and legislative requirements, and delivering the Environment Department Work Plan aligned with operational objectives.

Reporting to the Environmental Superintendent, the Environmental Coordinator plays a key role in embedding environmental management practices across the operation and supporting continuous improvement in environmental performance.

As our Environmental Coordinator, you will:

  • Develop, implement and maintain Environmental Management Plans and ensure all environmental management plans and systems are aligned with relevant legislation and ISO 14001 requirements.
  • Coordinate and monitor environmental aspects, impacts and risks across site in accordance with Environmental Management Plans.
  • Undertake disturbance assessments and forecasting to support closure planning and regulatory approvals.
  • Support environmental reporting, compliance obligations and assurance activities
  • Maintain a strong field presence, actively engaging with the workforce to promote environmental awareness and compliance.
  • Manage and supervise contractors and consultants delivering environmental monitoring, projects and site activities.
  • Build and maintain effective working relationships with internal stakeholders (Operations, Technical Services, Projects) and external stakeholders (Traditional Owners, consultants, and landholders as required)
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of environmental systems and team capability through coaching, mentoring and leadership

Qualifications

  • Tertiary qualification in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, or a related discipline
  • Experience in environmental management within the resources or mining industry
  • Demonstrated experience in environmental compliance, monitoring and management systems
  • Supervisor qualifications (S1, S2, S3 & G2) or ability to obtain
  • Experience using ArcGIS (Pro) or similar GIS platforms

Highly regarded

  • Experience in rehabilitation planning and execution
  • Strong understanding of QLD environmental legislation and approvals frameworks
  • Experience with ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems
  • Contractor and project management experience
  • Strong stakeholder engagement and influencing capability
