Job Description

The Environmental Compliance Specialist supports enterprise operations by developing, implementing, and maintaining environmental compliance programs aligned with applicable federal, state, and local regulations. This role operates across organizational boundaries to support regulatory alignment, risk reduction, and consistent execution in vegetation management, utility infrastructure, and right-of-way activities.

Work includes a combination of regulatory research, engineering-informed program development, field engagement, and systems-based activities to ensure environmental requirements are translated into practical, executable processes that support operational performance and compliance.

This role includes ownership of defined environmental compliance programs or workstreams, with accountability for development, implementation, and continuous improvement outcomes.

This role is expected to build environmental compliance standards where they do not currently exist.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • This position typically has no direct supervisory responsibilities but may, when appropriate, provide technical guidance, coordination, or functional leadership for environmental compliance initiatives, workstreams, or programs.

Essential Functions:

  • Conduct regulatory research and interpretation of environmental requirements, including federal, state, and local regulations applicable to vegetation management, land disturbance, waste management, FIFRA and utility operations.

  • Develop, implement, and maintain environmental compliance programs, including stormwater management, erosion and sediment control, watercourse protection, spill prevention practices, waste management, emergency response, community right to know .

  • Apply engineering-based thinking to evaluate field conditions and operational practices, developing practical solutions that meet regulatory requirements while supporting operational efficiency.

  • Translate regulatory and technical requirements into clear procedures, work instructions, and field guidance aligned with operational realities.

  • Partner with cross-functional stakeholders to integrate environmental compliance requirements into operational procedures, training materials, and field tools.

  • Conduct field engagement instructor lead training and validation activities to ensure environmental programs are practical, effective, and consistently applied across operations.

  • Identify environmental risks associated with operational activities such as land disturbance, heavy equipment use, right-of-way work, and storm response, and support development of mitigation strategies.

  • Support audit readiness and compliance assurance by maintainingaccurate documentation, program records, and alignment with regulatory expectations.

  • Serve as a subject matter resource for environmental compliance, providing guidance to operational and leadership teams.

  • Collect, synthesize, and present environmental data and insights to inform decision-making and continuous improvement efforts.

  • Maintain environmental compliance documentation, resources, and tracking systems to ensure consistency and audit readiness.

  • Demonstrate agility in responding to evolving regulatory requirements and operational priorities, applying independent judgment within assigned program scope.

Work Environment:

  • Primarily office - or remote-based, with periodic engagement in operational environments.

Travel Requirements:

  • Occasional travel asrequired to support initiatives across company geographical footprint.

Required education and experience:

  • Relevant experience in environmental compliance, environmental engineering, civil engineering, EH&S, or regulatory program support within operational or field-based industries.

  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and apply environmental regulations in real-world operational environments.

  • Experience supporting or developing programs related to land disturbance, construction, utility, or right-of-way activities.

Preferred education and experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, Civil Engineering, or related field.

  • Experience with environmental regulatory frameworks such as stormwater management, erosion and sediment control, and water protection.

  • Background in utility, vegetation management, construction, or similar industries.

  • Experience supporting audits, inspections, or regulatory interactions.
